Quick Shift

  1. #1
    Hi there.

My gearbox, since i've had the car on 20k miles, has had a sloppy gearbox.

My mate reckons that if I got quick shift it would a) make loads of difference to the smoothness of the gear change and b) make the car a bit faster.

Are Quick Shifts worth it on a standard mk2 vtr?

I can understand having one on a tuned vts or something.

    * sloppy gear change *
  3. #3
probably not. new linkages could be worth looking at
  4. #4
as bullit has said, quickshift will just make the 'throw' shorter, have a look at linkages could make it better and less sloppy

id also suggest looking at the pin in the selector on the back of the box
mine had worn and was rocking in the selector

its 40odd pence for one from citroen or pug
and you just hammer the old out and the new in takes about 10 mins if you know what your doing

    a) yes it should make the change abit smoother
    b) do you actually know what a quick shift is? the only thing it will make quicker is the gear change but thats only becasue the throw from gear to gear is shorter

the pug/cit boxes have always been known to be sloppy, my gti6 and 205 gti were the same...

I'm getting the quickshift from GE but like whats already been put forward new linkages is always a good idea... I believe they will be 3 to replace.

if you are planning to replave the gear linkages then imo your better off going for the rose joined ones, which i believe you can get from GE aswell.

What differences in terms of acceleration does a quick shift have over a standard setup?

I never have any issues of getting any gears etc, it's just you can "stir" the gear stick which isn't normal lol.

acceleration gains will be minimal tbh
just means your not losing time being out of gear (in the change)

    if you can stir it
look at the linkages or the pin

My mate said it sounds like the gaitor to him but i'll have a look at this pin.

    Is it in the haynes?
  12. #12
i dunno if its in the haynes

if you look down at the top of the gearbox you will see the selctors (1on top 1 on the back) the pin is in the 1 at the back
play the selector about it should move a bit but not excesively

ye most pug and saxo gears feel "sloppy" lol good word! But most people get used to it, my mate drove my car and couldnt understand how i drove something so "floppy" but its just the way it is. A quickshift would simply make the throw shorter so your car would not be any quicker, you would just lose less speed shifting. People mainly get quickshifts because changes just feel nicer and crisper i suppose. Its a nice little mod..

    Worth the £40-£50 then?

just jack your car up, get under and get someone to wiggle the gear stick to see where the problem is!!

    Arrrgh

    Bloody computer

Sounds like linkages to me mate. You want to change them before they do actually go. I learned from that mistake.
  22. #22
A quickshift will in reality do no such thing. They shorten the gear movement so in theory its quicker to change gear, though the problem is you are limited by the synchromesh in the gearbox. Synchromech cannot cope with being rammed into gear super fast - you just wear the gearbox out prematurely, for really fast changes you need dog leg cogs

When combined with good condition rods, a quickshift can give a much better feel when changing gear which is not to be sniffed at.

How much do the linkages cost to replace at a garage?

Fit them yourself, save some money. Guide here:
