    any suggestions

    Oops...

Have you tried a big magnet? Providing it doesn't stick to the engine
  3. #3
yep just cannot seem to find the fucker

    Down an oil gallery ?

    Sounds expensive................
  6. #6
If its gone down the oil gallery it might end up in the sump but i wouldnt put money on it. Just make sure that it isn't wedged anywhere near the cam shaft.

Whatever you do not turn the engine over....
Try getting one of those magnets that extend and have a poke around with that...

thats where i think its gone, what u think i should do?

Could you not shine a light down and see if you can see it...
Failing that take the sump and hope it has fallen through fella

If its gone down the oil gallery i would drain the oil first and hope that it comes out with it. If its gone far enough down to go out of sight then its a fair bet that it would go the rest of the way to the sump.

so drain oil and then take the sump off would be best bet then?

    aslo repp'd you both
  12. #12
Personally would take the sump off.........draining the oil may not bring the peice out with it............
  13. #13
He has got to drain the oil to take the sump off anyway so if he crosses his fingers it may well come out with that. Other than that i agree the next step would be to take the sump off. If it doesnt appear in the sump you may well be able to see up or down the oil gallery's if you shine a light through them (when the sump and rocker cover are off). The latter is just a guess and i am presuming the oil gallery's run straight down vertically to the sump. If it happens to be stuck in the gallery then the next step is to try and fish it out with an extendable magnet. These are pretty powerfull and you should be able to latch onto it.

Cheers for the rep mate, only too glad to help.

    Aye, what Tim said!!!!!!!!

    Agree, with the other members.

I'd go for the strong magnet thing first and hope that it hasn't gone too far down. The biggest potential problem as I see it is if it gets stuck in the oil gallery and prevents oil from draining back down to the sump, although there is another one at the other end but it may not provide adequate drainage.

If it's in the sump it probably won't do much harm because the oil pick-up has a strainer on it to stop any sludge and debris from being drawn into the oil pump. Although I would understand if you weren't happy leaving it there.

its in bits and still cant find it, i can see through the 3 oil gallerys, i think its still up top somewhere, i tried flusjing it out but nothing, is there a way to see into the head without taking it off?
  18. #18
Clutching at straws again mate but is it under the cam or between the valve spring. Looking at the way the cam is sitting i imagine the spring wont be compressed which might leave a gap large enough for the bit to slip into ? I am only guessing now mate, but if it has then its serious bad luck that it managed to drop in such a difficult place.

    Sounds bad!

I think i'd take it to a Garage, probably rip you off like. I just wouldn't fancy taking the risk when i was taken things apart!!

I would highly recommend not putting the rocker cover back on and firing it up untill its found. If the bit is stuck somewhere up top then it could do some nasty damage if the car is fired up.

    Any joy with this fella???
  22. #22
nope it dissappeared, thinkin of biting the bullit and rebuildingand hoping it falls to the sump in due-course. i think i;ve isolated where it must be but requires the head being removed. it cant go far only thing it can possibly do is jam in between the valve spring but i think its too big to do so and even if it does manage to somehowi think it would destroy it as its only soft metal, then the only other place it can go is down the galley into the sump.

    i need an xray machine!!!!

drain the oil, then seive through the oil til you find it, make sure its not in the oil gullies use tissue to mop up any oil, in wont have gotten in the piston chamber.

if you start the car it could possibly cause a valve spring to get stuck or damage the cam.
  24. #24
Just drop the oil and check the sump mate, cheapest option imo
  25. #25
I think he has checked the sump and oil, the galleries appear to be clear. If it is trapped in the valve spring which i suspect then it could do some damage if the car is fired up. It doesnt matter how soft the metal is, even if it breaks up what damage are those peices going to do to the cam and valve spring ? I was under the impression that most of these screw driver bits are hardened.

    Tim
  26. #26
I would have thought they were hardened tbh....ah well whip the head off then....you sure it actually went in there fella and hasnt dropped through onto the floor..........
  27. #27
I wouldnt have thought you would need to take the head off first but maybe i am missing something ?
If your going to go to those extremes to find it then i would take the camshaft out first and see if its in the valve spring. If it is in the valve spring and you cant get the bugger out with the camshaft removed then its time to take the head off and fetch the valve spring and valve out.

Drastic measures to find it i know but that seems to be the only logical process. If you fire it up with the bit still 'missing' make sure you have your fingers crossed when you do it

Check the floor under neath? mabey bounced on the side and fell down, mabey not hit the floor just fell and hidden behind the lights or sumthing i done the same, swear i dropped it in, but was under the lights in the engine bay!

found it!!! i chucked l;oads of oil through the top and it washed it out.

cant stop the bastard form leaking oil now

third time trying to reseal the sump, im doing it without tanking the exhaust off so it tight.

before anyone say take the exhaust off, i cant its welded its self on and the bolts have no edges wghere its corredeed away
