1.1 Gearbox in VTS...??

  1. #1
    Hey,

I was up Devon Car Show on Sunday and I was talking to a guy who said instead of buying a VTS gearbox (which are really hard to pick up 2nd hand) get a 1.1 gearbox, because of the ratio and linkages etc are basically the same.

Can anyone confirm or shed some more light on this please?

He said he had done it himself, but I'm find it hard to work out how?

    Thank you
    Carmi.

probably will fit but the only reason you will want this is for track days as youll be staying in a low gear youl have quicker accelaration, otherwise hes talking shit, vts = vts gearbox, also the top end on a 1.1 gearbox would not exceed 115mph id imagine anything over that it would probably blow up

A few people use the 1.1 box as a cheap replacement for an S box, gear ratios are practically the same, similar final drive. IIRC the 1.1 box acctually tops out a little higher than the VTS one?

Bear in mind mate that the VTS has larger wheels and a higher revving engine than the 1.1's do.

in other words just buy a vts gearbox then when you sell it 'no expense spared' rather than 'couldnt be assed paying for an s box so fitted a 1.1 box'
  5. #5
mk2 slag? where you getting your info from? they are practically the same ratios, can remember exactly but theres only a few mph difference in each gear.
  6. #6
Simo has one fitted on his VTS Turbo and it's been pretty good I think.

    So it does work.
  7. #7
Yeh, I just dont want to lose acceleration or top end as MK2SLAG said top end 115mph and I dont want to be changing gear after 2 secs..

Thank you for your help, any advice on this is greatly appriciated.

    Carmi.

will fit easily carmi and be fine apparently there is one weak part of it il try find out what it is later ryan the mod covered it in a previous thread i read hope your well x

MK2SLAG was mistaken, the 1.1 box is almost identical to the VTS, you wont notice the difference when your driving, its marginally longer ratio'd than the VTS box so its top end is also a few mph higher than the VTS box.

As suvvy mentioned i think the centre shaft of the box is thinner than the one in the VTS box but i dont think anyone has ever really had a problem with this, not on a standardish engine anyway.

Yeh I heard it might be something to do with 3rd gear...??

Do you think I'd still get S performance out of it?

Im well thank you, nice to meet you Sunday x

Well you say standard engine.. You mean not been cammed or on throtle bodies..??

I wouldnt usually ask so many questions but cant be bothered wit hthe hassle of changing once then having to change it again.

yea of course you will still get S performance out of it, theyre are pretty much the same ratios as the S box, just that little part is slightly different. so will still go like stink! much love x

Yeh should be fine, cams or throtlte boddies id imagine ok too its only if you were going boosted i'd do a bit more research.

Although if Lukes right and Simos using one putting down 190 (at the wheels?) then your in the clear!

Think it's at the fly, but either way it's gotta be one of the quickest ones on here so you'll be fine.

was thinking of using a 1.1 box in my vts an maybe using my 1.3 rallye diff in it to lower the gearing abit more
  18. #18
    IM BLONDE AND FEMALE..

Please explain at my level of understanding
  19. #19
andy, you can just change the diff to lower final drive. you need to change the crown wheel and crown wheel pinion.

the 1.1 box has a smaller diff than the vts box, only weaker part in it but you wont really notice unless your a burnout king/queen.

    cheers mate

as said the diffs weaker. 1.1 doesnt have sport ratios

i had a reconditions one. felt lovely when in "snigger"
  22. #22
So are these chocolate compared to the VTS boxes or will they last aslong as you dont do burnouts etc?

any body no how to work out the speeds in each gear if i put a 1.3 rallye diff 4.4 in a 1.1 saxo gearbox
  25. #25
    hope this shed some light

    1.1 Box, VTS 7250 limit

    VTS Box, VTS 7250 limit
  26. #26
Basically - its one or the other some people swear by it and everyone else doesnt!

Will I still be able to get 135mph out of my car with a 1.1 gearbox with out it blowing up??
  27. #27
you normally do that speed then
  28. #28
andy - you cant just fit the diff to change the final drive ratio. you need to change crown wheel and crown wheel pinion.
by sports ratio he ment the gearsets that are found in teh vts, vtr, gti, rallye and xsi boxs are different to that of the base model cars.

you'll need to use the program above to work it out, using teh ratios for 1st to 5th from the 1.1 box and the final drive ratio from the rallye box.

i thought the way to go if your going to be running high hp was to use the 1.5 derv box? 1st to fourth are apparently pretty close, with a long final drive? duno if this is true or not but i was told this?
