Brake Hoses Rounded Off

  1. #1
Tried changing my hoses for stainless a while back, couldnt budge, spanner kept just slipping, realised its all rounded off, i have the correct spanner for brake lines before anyone asks and ive not rounded them off myself they were already done

so how the frick can i get them off, mold grips will just spin...

if i get it off at the top then its obv easier as im not lend into the arch trying to get the bit from the caliper, but i dont want to damage the thread, anyone comes across this before and what did you do?
  2. #2
not sure but would you be able to get some mole grips on it and get it off?

i no you said mole grips will spin but if you use the correct ones. and decent make you should be ok thats how i did mine and they were completely rounded off.

1.Use mole grips and make sure there tight so they clap correctly
2.The union is 8mm (I think) use a 7mm open ended spanner and hammer the c**t on sounds abit brutal I no but theres not many options left just make sure your using the mole-grips 100% the right way

I had to do Alex on here's with mole grips, done a good 10-15 cars front brakes before, first time i've had to resort to it, just use round mouthed ones and do them up fucking tight, if that doesn't do it then i'm not sure what will.

Pred - they're far too small for stilsons IMO
  9. #9
can get small ones though cant you alex???
  10. #10
If you really cant do it with mole grips and WD40 bath then what about cutting the pipe off and using one of those reverse drill bit things that tighten as they losen the bolt you drill em into drilled into the back of the part left stuck in?
  11. #11
I agree with pred now fuck the little molegrips and get the stilson's on it lol
  12. #12
im sure ive seen some mini stilsons in my garage lol, if not dremel two sides straight and get a wrench on it again
  13. #13
stilsons won't put anywhere near as much pressure on as a good set of mole grips, my snap on ones rock

Prefer a good old pair of vice-grips there older than me and stipp grip like new
  15. #15
Small footprints might do it, or moleys as said

wow he fits kitchens does that make him a qualified mechanic?
good to see you can use mold grips but i think you should be using mole grips for the job mate that might be your problem?
  18. #18
why would fitting kitchens make him a qualified mechanic? you understand that a kitchen is in a house and not in a car yes?

my point was he also knows how to use tools and uses all kinds, so he knows how to use mold grips.

ive used several sets of grips and its not having it, which was why i was asking what else could i use as i couldnt think off the top of my head
  19. #19
you were trying to make it sound like because he fits kitchens means he can use tools! my mate fits kitchens and cant do fuck all with tools.
obviously mole grips the main one clamped on as tight as possible.
cut the line off and use the reverse drill bits to drill and remove it.
could try and drill out and retap the thread, might be to messy though

Theres a tool that as you tighten or untighten the grip gets stronger and stronger.
    cant remember what therecalled mind.
  21. #21
mate has his own business isnt someones dog

wouldnt want to retap it with it being brakes

thinkin dads mate has a big metal works whack it in a clamp there and see what that will do
  22. #22
have you tryed using pipe mole grips as they have got rounded head on them so you get more contact but do them up seriously tight

if that fails do whats all ready been mentioned and file some flats on then go for it again
  23. #23
could always a set of pliers on the hose then a set of mole grips ont he pliers to increase the gripping power
  24. #24
Just be careful when you do eventually tighten up the new brake hoses as its easy to overtighten & end up cracking the caliper.

    mole grips ftw
i had them slip then just went hardcore tight, couldnt get the fuckers back off

the way to get them off is to put the right size hammer on, instead of hitting the hammer round to turn it, hit it straight on and it releases them, dont ask how it works but williams told me to do it and worked fine on mine.

9/10 if try turning them you will just round them off.
  26. #26
Hitting it with a hammer shocks it which inturn helps remove but only really works well with alluminium

you can use water pipe wrench mate, it has a jagged face going that way>>>>>> then another face going this way <<<<<< an when you out pressure on them they tighten up the harder you work them, thats the only thing that would do mine, even mole grips were no match.

if you want i could get a picture of said tool?

this kind of tool buddy, in actual fact thy are useful for a lot of things.

    That's a stilson wrench Fanny.

Also add a bit of heat to the offending rounded hose. Usually helps to free it off.
