does this cause damage?

  1. #1
i dropped a 285 piper cam kit in a while ago and the tappets started tapping. my mate done the timing and adjusted and it still done it. then when i had it remapped they adjusted them again and still does it.

    does it cause damage?

any other ideas how to get rid of it as it sounds gash?

Cammed cars are always tappy tbh mate its a characteristic of uprated cams, along with a gurt lumpy idle

idle is spot on is just tappy?

    lifting higher...tappy tappy.

the only thing that settles it is octane booster.

    Come again?

Are you using stronger valver springs?

Do VTR's have hydraulic lifters? If so, does the tapping sound only happen during startup or is it continous?

well i change the whole head when i fitted them and was told everything was uprated which my mate said they have

    no they ain't hydralic lifters

it only happens when i accelerate in the lower revs.

for some reason octance booster(fuel additive) settles it down for a little while.

does it cause damage the tapping?

wtf never knew octane booster did that, try it on v-power if you really think that solves it.

It won't, so I don't blame you for saying so...

If octane booster stops this noise, then it ain't your tappets that are causing the noise, that's for darn sure.

my vtr tapped a lot when i had a 285 in, its because of the higher lift i believe
but maybe its an injector thats noisy if fuel additive quietens it?

mate. its a vtr! it taps... lol.

might be wrong but my vtr was really tappy for months and even a mechanic I know couldn't figure it out then one day I spent like 5 hours searchng for it and it turned out that the previous owner had threaded a spark plug in the engine and must have been sitting a a slight angle.
was difficult to remove spark plug as it was threaded but luckily only the thread on the plug was ruined so once replaced the car is quiet again.

hope this helps solve your problem
