oil leak bottom end

   bought a 106 gti without it working, oil leak coming from underneath (just bout below downpipe n on bend). car turns over but never heard it running. any ideas what to do.

   could be:
   
   knacked/damaged oil filter.
   hole in bottom end (like i had, it will turn over but cut out)
   sump is shot.
   sump gasket is shot.

   I had similar thing with mine last week, oil filter seal had past its best, cheap replacement and seems to be ok so far

   sensible comments. dont want to jump in and just buy new engine, if its fixable "il try n fix it"

   all i mentioned is easily fixable
   
   bar the hole in bottom end, which will require engine replacement.

   had a few vts's vtr's in the past. making this gti into more track street car. no interia... steelies and not much else
