just wondering how much difference is there between the three e.g if i put one of them on my westie would it be much quicker?
(106) s1 rallye/xsi gearbox v westie

#1

#2s1 is the shortest ratio i think you can get will make acceleration alot faster, as would an xsi box
not sure how much difference there is between xsi and rallye
not sure what the westie box is like tho -
#4if you do alot of motorway miles its not advisable
-
#5I know of a s1 rallye box for sale lad only wants 150 delivered for it to
-
#6Thing is though, the Rallye and XSi box's are from higher revving car's..
You will be doing less MPH in each gear with the lower revving Westie engine..Also power and torque are made at different points in the Westie and VTR engines and their std gearing show this..The longer ratio's suit the spread out powerband of the lower revving engines whereas the Rallye and XSi box's in question are developed for engines with narrower powerbands..
Also, when you change gear the rev drop is smaller on the Rallye and XSi box's..This is because the powerband is narrower and max torque and power are higher up in the rev range on the Rallye's and XSi's than the VTR and Westie engines. So whereas the VTR and Westie box's (which have pretty much identical ratio's and FD's) will allow the revs to drop from 6k down to 4k to get the best from the way the engine is setup the other two box's in question will only drop the revs to around 4.75k-5k which is fine for an engine which produces everything high up but no so good for the Westie and VTR engines..
Its hard to explain but i think i made the point..lol
It will help you get off the line but wont make much difference at all tbh, will make the car rev out quicker, but you will be doing less speed in each gear so wont really gain much..My mate has a 206 XSi box on his VTR which has the VTS ratio's and FD and that is no quicker at all than my standard VTR..Its made no noticeable difference other than cost him more money in fuel on the motorway as his is revving higher at 70mph than mine..
If i was in your position i would leave the Westie box on it..If you want the extra strength of the sporty box's than the VTR would be the one i would go for as that has the best ratio's and FD for the lower revving engines..also the diff on the VT* box's are bigger and stronger.. -
#7yeah i knew the rallye engine has much more torque/power higher up the rev range as my mate has one was just considering options thanks for the info repped!Quote:Thing is though, the Rallye and XSi box's are from higher revving car's..

#8the revs drop will be the same with all the "sports" gearbox's as the final drive doesnt affect rev drop it the actual gear ratios tha do that.
my s1 rallye box has transformed my car on track and pulls very well on exit of corners...
like mario said, your engine doesnt rev like the vts/gti so will have a very short top speed. -
#9yeah but the westie doesnt have a great top speed anyway i was just considering my options as its mainly country roads where i live i understand that the westie's engine doesnt produce enough power/torque to get the full potential of an s1 box was wondering how much of a difference it would make(as i would like a bit more torque for country roads) but it seems to be not much thanks for the infoQuote:the revs drop will be the same with all the "sports" gearbox's as the final drive doesnt affect rev drop it the actual gear ratios tha do that.

#10with your rev limit (providing standard) would give you a theoretical top speed of around 105mph lol....
a gearbox is essentially a torque converter and te shorter the ratios the quicker it will accelerate BUT sometimes its not feasable to use this type of gearbox for a road car..
if any box then id say either standard or s2 rallye box. -
#11yeah might try and find a cheap one in the next few months and see what its like repped for the infoQuote:with your rev limit (providing standard) would give you a theoretical top speed of around 105mph lol....

#12danny whats the difference between s1 rallye and xsi then?
how much difference is there?
i want to know what i could expect to get from top end with revs raised to 7800 with an xsi final drive, be interesting to see if i can get to it in germany lol -
#13what would the s1 box be like on my cammed vts limited at 7800? worth putting on?
-
#14yates with xsi and 7800rpm top speed would be theoretical 138mph so i think thats ideal tbh..very good final drive. s1 rallye would feel more frantic and possibly slightly better on small tracks but imo xsi is best ratio for n/a.
groomster, it would make it a quick car and would do a theoretical 130'ish top speed.
this is with 195/45/15's on by the way, tyre profile and wheel size has a slight effect. -
#15I will have vtr rims on think there 195/45/14 arnt they
-
#17is there much diffrence in speed when having vtr rims on and vts 14s to 15s ralking 1/4 mile times rather than track
-
#18not really, 14" will give very slightly better acceleration but 15" will give slightly more grip off the line so compramises really. as far as 1/4 mie times are concerned the shorter box's make hardly any difference. i think someone improved by 0.1 with shorter box over 1/4 mile but that could of been many things.
