VTS revving further than usual.

    Hi all, for some reason my vts is revving higher than usual.

    I opened it up the other night, dont usually thrash it as i love my car but when i looked down at the rev counter it was on 8k and still not hitting the limiter, quickly i changed gear, i thought it was weird but was going like hell.

    I tried it again to see if i was looking at it right and again upto 8k and wasnt hitting the limiter

    Ive opened it up in the past before and hit the limiter at 7.5k but just seems strange its hitting 8k all of a sudden. Is it safe for the engine to be hitting that?

    Only things done are full decat system and raceland enclosed filter, its not cammed yet so should it be hitting such high revs?

    Before anyone says why you hitting the limiter, it wasnt on purpose and noticed it by mistake, i dont race around and tbh cant afford the fuel to be doing that all the time lol.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    the idle control valve could cause it does it rev up on its own when your just sitting idling ave seen a few saxos, 106s doing this

    Mine hits the limiter at around 7500-7600 going off the tacho, 98 VTS....

    Thats a god point, later on that evening, say about 2 hours later the car was, how can you say this, drivin on its own.

    At idle would be fine but every so often the car would drive on its own, if i was to pull away and ease off the throttle the cars just keeps going like im on the throttle still but im not. Only done it a few times and was quite dangerous cus when i put my foot down on the clutch to change gear the revs get faster and the car keeps pulling if you know what i mean.

    Been fine since though

    The limiter is electronic so iirc your ecu is f**ked

    check the throttle cable for being sticky and check it on the throttle body aswell, cleaning the throttle body out aswell could help

    Sounds like your throttle body needs cleaning bud!!! Had the same thing few months back,gave it clean with carb cleaner!! did the trick.....

    Yeah I'd say cleaning the throttle body would be the first port of call, however don't rule out the idle speed control valve, it is common for them to go on Saxo's...

    yeah the rev limit is controlled by the ecu. after a certain rpm fuel and spark will be cut to stop the engine over revving. tbh i dnt think it would have revved that high, maybe the rev couter isnt giving a correct reading. the engine wnt last long revving that high, the followers will be about to explode lol

    If the ECU is allowing the car to rev beyond the factory prescribed RPM ceiling, it cannot possibly be ANYTHNG to do with outside sensors or cleaning or cables. The ECU should cut spark/fuel at the RPM ceiling whether the idle valve is open/closed and whether thigns are dirty or clean

    So what do you think the problem could be Andy, like you said i have cleaned everything up and took it for a spin just now and still hitting 8k and wants to go further and is pulling like a train

    I dont want to keep trying it but obviously i need to get what ever it is sorted. It idles superb and nothing seems to have changed apart from the revs.

    I said earlier the car was driving on its own but all is fine with that now, ive cleaned the trottle body up and cleaned the idle control valve up and still wants to pull past 8k.

    has it been chipped? they can raise rev limit

    Does it actually get to 8k? If you hit the limiter, the rev count will be showing around 7.7k

    Hasnt been chipped, never done it before though. Only started since saturday and only got full decat and raceland enclosed filter, planning on manifold next week and throttle bodies next month but need this sorted before hand.

    It goes up to 8k easy and went just passed earlier today, car is pulling with it too, doesnt even hit the limiter though.

    push it abit further and see if u actually have a limiter, u may find its the rev counter misreading or something and appears to be doin 8k when its not

    Yeah i know but i get abit worried about pushing it near the red line as it is, i didnt do it on purpose and dont like doing it all the time, i just hope it doesnt go bang if i push it too far and try and find the limiter, the pick up is exactly the same throughout the revs as before if you know what i mean so dont think the rev counter is out

    it shud start losing power that high in the revs, not keep pulling hitting the limiter wont damage it as long as it has one somewhere lol !!

    hitting the limiter can becouse of the sudden change in the pressure that builds up then changes irc

    Thats what im worried about, it just keeps pushing, i doesnt feel like any lag what so ever, usually when you hit too high revs you feel the lose of power but mine seems to want to go more.

    At the time of opening it up i was with a few other vts's and mine just kept pulling from there's and they were flat out.

    There must be something else wrong and not the rev counter being at fault as against other vts's they would be pretty close with near enough similiar mods but they were hitting the limiter and having to change but mine wanted to keep going.

    Its good but its not if you get me, i dont want it to go bang and need the limiter to know its urging me to change gear

    Could check the revs in 5th @ 70mph should be 3.5k see if its over reading as b0t13 said.

    just put it in nuetral and take it up to 8500/8750, and see if it hits the limiter then, i wouldnt go much higher though.

    Yeah good idea, dont think ill try it tonight though lol, if it doesnt is there anyway of resetting the ecu ie unplugging it and then reconnecting it to see if that solves it?

    attach a secondary RPM gauge on it to check the RPM reading, although the 70mph 3500rpm in top test is also extremely good

    yeh about cheking the rpm thing, if u go to a MOT center, im sure they will let u quickly qhip it onto the co2 tester, they have a rpm thing that clips onto your rpm wire. just quickly check it there.

    Right tested the car tonight, at 70mph the revs are at about 3400 or just over but not quite 3500.

    100revs difference shouldnt make too much difference mate. Maybe the reading on your dash is true, but your ECU is being told your doing less revs therefore the ECU is letting it rev further?

    Get checking all your connections if u havnt tried revving it in nuetral yet.

    If i was to disconnect the ecu would it reset it or would it cause problems?

    Havent tried it on the spot yet, starting to get worried about it revving that high and tbh dont want to keep doing it lol.

    i was at the garage yesterday and they said some ECUS are restted by switching the ignition on and off 5 times. Dont actually start the car, have the bonnet open and listnen for the click on then when its ready.

    Worth a try? i dont think unpluggin the ECU will reset it, as if u take the battery out its the same prinicple.

    Just to let you know ...

    My car's cammed and has raised limiter.

    Limiter hits around 8000 rpm on the rpm.

    My car's had this limit and cams for the past 3 years and regularly goes at least to 7400-7800 rpm and i've had no problems, so I wouldn't worry too much about safety - however I wouldn't suggest revving any higher that 7800 rpm often on standard bottom end.

    The bottom ends on these cars standard are pretty damn bullet proof. However as said it could be your rev counter reading wrong.

    As far as I'm aware, the hydraulic lifters shouldn't allow the car to really rev any higher than about 7800 rpm - hence the high power cars running solid lifters allowing them to rev over 8000-8400 rpm.

    So the fact your engine is even still pulling at this high rpm is a little odd. Should naturally limit itself when the lifters are unable to cope with the rpm. (don't quote me on that though).
