footwell neon wiring

  1. #1
I have 2 neons. I want them coming off the interior light so that they come on when the doors open. If I find the live going into the interior light and attach the Red (+) wire from the neons to it, what do I do with the Black (-) wire from the neons?

    Thanks
    Nick

Attach them to an earth spot. Also i think you can attach them directly to what the Interior Lights are attached to.

Also keep in mind that the interior light might have more then one input because it can either say completely on or else on when the door opens so there must be 2 red wires going in.

theres a grey, orange and yellow. i have a feeling yellow is earth. should i split the + into 2 and have it going to the orange and the grey?

If you want them coming on just with the interior light, trace the wires with a multimeter and that'll tell you. Anything with no feed going through should be the earth- or you can just earth them elsewhere, anywhere on the car's body that is metal will do.

Wire them to your electric windows, providing you have them. Make sure you earth, and don't overload the circuit or your car will eat more fuses than I do.

but i can rock the interior light to keep them on permantently if i want or not at all cant i?

Yes, you can, but then your interior light is on too... dilemma!!

You can remove the bulb from the circuit...

Or wire them on a separate switch, rob an interior light from a scrappy and then just basically mount it somewhere you can switch them on or off. Could get tricky, but would rock!

yeah you could mate! if you wire them to the light would have the same 3 options you have on the light normally! as for finding the right wires cut them all 3 or them find the ones you want (possibly all 3) then just twist them back together and wack a bit of insulation tape over them

    The man speaks truth!
Don't go by colour when wiring stuff up!
I learnt that the hard way once... multimeters are the way forward!
The way I wired my last neons was-

    - permanent live on the back of the head unit
    - to discreetly placed switch
    - to leds

Then you can have them on or off whenever you want! Even if your ignition is off!

I learnt the hard way too!

I wired them into my ashtray light, switched them on and took out my entire dashboard because I overloaded the circuit...

Yehh just had a go now with an old neon and been shoving wires in plug to get contanct to test it. I think I need all 3. So the (+) I split into 2 and go into orange and grey on the interior light, and the (-) goes to the yellow??
And im going to take the bulb out. If I need light for a long period of time I will put the bulb back in as its easy to do, and if i need to quickly look at something in the dark i will put it in my footwells lol

That'll look proper dodgy if you've got a bloke in your passenger seat and you're leaning down with peering at something... sure you want to do that?
  12. #12
erm well yeah. So what i said would be right? pos into the grey and orange and then neg into the yellow?
  13. #13
Best bet is to find a small bulb with wires on it, and wire it up whichever way you think it should be. If it works, then it's right (my guess would be + to orange and yellow, and - to grey... but that's me...)

i have some other black wire spliced into the grey which i think is from the alarm..would this help determine what the grey lead is?
  15. #15
Yes, black wires are usually negative, therefore it may well be earthed into that. On the other hand, I'd've thought you alarm would have been earthed elsewhere- so it could also be positive. That means we're still no further along... damn

Have you got spare fuses handy in case you blow a couple? If so, then just jump in and test. I do think that grey is negative though.
  16. #16
i dont have any fuses. and im off in my car now. so i will wait till i have some spare fuses. where do you get them from?
  17. #17
Halfords will charge you for a bulk box, or you can visit a scrappy and get literally tonnes for nothing by just shoving them in your pockets. I have over 500 fuses because of scrappy visits.
  18. #18
    lol
erm also. earlier i tried with some old neon i have, and it only worked when i plugged it + into orange and - into yellow? so thats why i assume - is yellow?!
  19. #19
    You're probably right then.

    Good luck!
  20. #20
but when i plugged it - yellow and + orange it stayed on whatever the switch was, so does that mean i need to split + into the orange and grey??
also its a 20A fuse, wont that be hard to blow with a single 12v neon?
  21. #21
That says to me it's getting constant feed, which means the wires could be wrong... have you tried orange and grey and grey and yellow, for example? Might be a wire that just works for something else.

You should be OK if it's 20A, but better safe than sorry. Try it now, if anything blows just replace it before it gets dark!
  22. #22
    replace it with what!! lol
  23. #23
    Another 20A fuse.
  24. #24
    but dont have any
  25. #25
im going out with my dad in a min in my car, and my car is currently blocking the whole drive so worried if a fuse goes, i'll wait till i get to the end of the drive so im not blocking the whole familys cars lol
  26. #26
Lol your car will still start and drive! Just will be your interior light fuse that goes!
  27. #27
its fuse 8 on this diagram:

    thanks to predator
the interior light isnt on its own fuse
  28. #28
tbh if it blows i could swap it with fuse9 which today is less important as its nice and sunny lol
  29. #29
Your car will still work and drive, assuming the fuse actually goes!

Your best bet is just to try it. Or if you don't want to break anything, try F10 and live without having it come on with the interior light.
  30. #30
right im gunna wait till i go out, then try the yellow and grey, then pos in orange and grey and neg in yellow
  31. #31
i'll let you know how it goes
  32. #32
Good luck! Hope it's helped a bit.
  33. #33
    footwell neons look rudee!
  34. #34
i did them and here they are :
