Help With Neons Wiring

  1. #1
    Hello There,

I just got my Neons today all powered by a Cigarette Lighter (3 Units). Now i also have a cigarette lighter expansion 3-to-1 which i will be using to plug the Neons into and this adapter goes into another adapter which is attached on my Center Console (which also includes a voltage checker).

Till this point all is planned well however i want to do this job as neat as possible and avoid any wiring and if POSSIBLE i would like the neons to be powered with a neat switch (maybe one already in the car?).

My last resort is to plug / unplug the Cigarette lighter adapter to turn the neons on and off but as said i would like something neat.

Rep awaiting to anyone who is willing to help out!

If I were you I'd actually take the cigarette lighter adapter off and wire the neons in elsewhere. Your best bet is the nearest electric circuit that can handle it. If you were to wire the switch in wherever you have a blank switch, then find the nearest circuit that can handle the power.

Alternately, you can just wire the neons straight into the car's fusebox/battery, running off a fused circuit. It would be similar to wiring an amp in- pass a fused circuit from the engine bay to the interior of the car, then it'll all be hidden and out of sight as all the wiring will be underneath the dash.

If you want to use an existing circuit then you can use the underneath of the dash again, it seems the best place as your neons will be there already. Just tap into an existing circuit using a multimeter to establish which is live and which is earth.

Is there any reason why i would avoid the cigarette lighter adapter? This will be hidden under the dash as well and im assuming it will avoid a lot of wiring up.

What i had in mind was more of attaching a switch to this to power up the Neons. Plus with the cigarette lighter adapter i can turn it on as well even if the ignition is off. Of course that will also be the case if i wire it up like an Amp.

In my opinion it just looks really messy and quite half-baked if you use the cigarette lighter to power them!

I'd personally just have them on their own circuit, that's what I have my headlight LEDs on and it's actually really easy to do. That way, as you said, can have them on when the ignition is off. Constant live feed ftw.

What about a Switch for On / Off Operations ?

Yeah you can wire that in too.

    Basically, you need to go...

Fusebox > fuseholder + 10A fuse > through grommet to cabin > neons somewhere between cabin & switch > positive into the switch > negative coming away from switch > negative earthed somewhere in the car on bare metal.

No worries... good luck! They do look nice when they're done.

a mate done his by connecting the neons to his stereo so whenever he turned the sterio on the neons come on. looks well tidy.

I was going to run Neons off the cd player But then i realised through day they would be lefted on. And i could not see point.
Will be best to do what Evolution4589 said as you can turn them off and on as you like!

U could run the neons off the stereo, tho i would think u would need a relay switch as the remote turn on wire for the stereo isnt ment to provide much current

not 100% how its done but on the back of the fag lighter there is a little plug that pulls off and i have seen people on here say they have wired into this, you just need to find which one is the live wire into this thenuse an earth (any metal part of the car body) and then just wire a switch in line too
