    strip it
    cage it
    upgrade suspension
    upgrade brakes
    fit vts engine
    cam engine
    fit cut slicks

    in that order

easyer to fit uprated cams when the engine is out of the shell though if they have the funds

nice sounds good although i was thinkin of sticking with the good old 8v

Find a track, drive around it.

cant afford a decent engine then?

Just spend money on a very well spec suspension set up and brakes.

    If you stick with 8v, do the same as Paul listed anyhow;

    strip it
    cage it
    upgrade suspension
    upgrade brakes

And you'll still be reeling in bigger powered cars. Although obviously depends on the driver. The above is easily worth the same as a 20bhp increase if done correctly.

You will want more power, it's inevitable.

Sort the suspension and brakes first, cage it with buckets and harnesses and see where that takes you. For the love of god get some decent suspension, none of this spax or koni rubbish.

    Get stripping, it's free.

Do both, give Craig a bit of a challenge.

yer im hopefully at end of year invest in some billies 40mm setup something like that, ive got standard vtr wheels on atm, but really looking into investing into some 16" speedline turinis or oz superleggeras something like that, i dont really wana start stripping it untill i can get the money for buckets/cage/harnesses all at once.

if i were to do it again, the first thing id do would be to get a coilover conversion kit, some pugsport dampers and some custom springs, chuck some 22mm t/bars in and a suitable arb.

you'll never want to change that again.

combine that with some willwoods or other 4-pots, thats most of it sorted.

however, get a cage in there first.

stiffens up the chassis, and sorts out the safety issue

for people on a budget who also will use the car on the road they are not that bad, especially if its got the springs and shocks correctly matched.
Granted a harder set up is better on track but it depends if this car is a road/track car or just a toy imo, worth mentioning that also harder shocks may be overdamping at the rear if uprated TBs are not fitted
Its cheap spring kits where I would really be worrying.

Everyone I've known use spax has found them to be awful, no matter what make of car. Buy cheap buy twice, especially for track. This is why I'm holding out until I can afford billies or pugsports.

I would have thought 15s would be ideal for track, 4 pots can still be fit behind them with the right design of wheel and you've got a very good tyre choice for reasonable price.

First things first is it actually going to be driven around a track in its lifetime?

If saying going the full way ditch the 8v.

    Totally strip
    Buckets
    Full Roll Cage
VTS engine with choice of cams depending on what your after
    throttle bodies
    4pots on front
    rear bias valve

    basically the above.

are you actually going to do it though?
  17. #17
yes i am totally considering this option, it will be going on the track maybe not often but it will at somepoint in its life or for as long as i own it yes, i duno i dont really wana go full out like that i like it for everyday use aswell, so id rather stick wif the 8v and just basically work with that and few extras, i think cams are as much as id go.

so really you want a road car you can commute in comfort in yet have fun on track.

so not a dedicated track slut imo.

because everyone who wants to be cool is a track whore these days

Having fun on track can be anything, example a guy in a banged up rover 214 at the ring this weekend bought it for a laugh and had fun out there.

hes got a nice daily driver for normal use.

people need to decide what the car is for all the time before making decisions about what to do to it imo.
  23. #23
Mine is my daily driver but I want it track ready for the dry days next year and a few ring trips. My luxury items so far are headlining, cd player and 2 speakers. I do about 300 miles a week and I'm fine with it as it is, got seats, harnesses and cage to go in before too long also.

You can have a compromise but it'll mean either the daily drive or track suitability will suffer, you won't get the best of both worlds but you can find a happy medium, it's up to you how you find that.

or if you want a bit of luxury, buy a ford ka
