3 Stud to 4 Stud?

  1. #1
    Hi

I want some alloy wheels for my car, i only have 3 stud front and back :L. I don't want to change the brake shoes nor anything else. I believe you can buy a conversion from 3 to 4? Anyone know what this is called and where to find it?

    Also.. what are spacers?

    Rep awaiting

    thanks!

Spacers make the wheel stick out from the car more. Some people but spacers on so that they look better, although if your wheel sticks out more than the wheel arch it is actually illegal. Most people though use them to change the offset. If the wheel is designed for Fords, then the hib to the face of the alloy will be different compared to a saxo/106. So some people want alloys that you cant get for saxos/106 so you need spacers or else they will be far in the wheel arch and look stupid
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, thats just what I think
  3. #3
yeah your right nick lot of hassle in it tho as spacers have to be about 30mm as known 2 people who wanted to was going to cost to much as for your stud conversion kit it wont be cheap there about £120 for 4stud - 5 stud havnt seen any 3stud - 4 stud about try ebay
  4. #4
So basically if you have a wide 'bodykit' you have spacers to make the wheels look in proportion.. thats what i thought. But why not buy thicker wheels? Look's and handles better?

Still need help about 3 to 4 studs

I want VTR alloys or something. And then going to put a VTR bodykit on.
  5. #5
because some wheels only come in certain widths, so if you want certain wheels you can only get them in one width. Also some body kits are so wide you would need a very wide wheel.
I think quite large spacers are bad for the chassis though, ive heard they put strain on it may be wrong though
  6. #6
i think they would put more strain on bolts trying to bend up tbh
  7. #7
Well if its goin to be that much, i'll look for 3 stud alloys, or the multistud ones. Like you said Marcos It willl put more stress on the bolts and the surrounding areas, i can imagine it.

    Thanks
  8. #8
Well couldn't i buy 4 stud break drums and 4 stud break disc's.. would it work that way?

    Thanks
    Dan

nope, ur wheels arnt held on by the drums and disks, i think. and yea if ur looking into spending hundreds on stud conversions cash in and buy a 1.1 with 4 stud, or a 1.4. but imo id just find sum reasonable 3 stud alloys!
  10. #10
becareful though that your wheels dont patrude out of the wheel arches because the police will really bum you for it very illegal, if u have ur heart set on them just extend the wheel arches out abit so there in line with the wheels because if im not mistaken that is perfectly legal
  11. #11
btw parantly its because sticky out wheels up stones and somethin to do with running people over lol
  12. #12
    throw up stone**
  13. #13
I have the same problem, ive been to my local car garage and they quoted me £110 a pair for spacers ! so if you've got the cash then it might be worth it but if not just get 3 stud wheels !
  14. #14
Hey guys, i havn't got time to write a full reply now, but ill write one later with the proper way of converting to 4 stud without the need for spacers.
  15. #15
best of just getting front hubs and rear axle of a 4 stud car and swapping over
  16. #16
So can anyone write a guide on how to go 3stud-4stud? Or link me to one if theres already one written
  17. #17
ye as said you either need hub adaptors, which noramlly incorparate a spacer. Hubcentric is the only way to go really tbh especially with adaptors. Ull need to get longer studs possibley and different wheel nuts, as has been said probably just as cheap to convert to 4 stud axel/ setup from a later model
  18. #18
It is cheaper to just get the correct parts to swap over with.

Theres many different ways that you can do it, depending how much money you want to spend

Buying a rear axle with 4 stud drums will be really cheap as not many people look for drum beams.
Or whilst your at it you could buy a VTR or VTS rear beam and upgrade to rear disks too whilst your at it

Front you're best buying the lower part of the struts off a 4 stud car, making sure that the bearings in the hub are decent of course.
lower modelled ones later 1.1's should be really cheap.

Or if you get 1.4, vtr or vts ones then theyll have the extra attachment for the potential to add a VTS front anti roll bar should you wish to do so, not necessary but the options there.

Once these parts are fitted you'll be able to fit the vtr wheels which you've wanted/it opens up a much wider selection than the 3 stud ones

£150 plus, depending on what spec ones you buy.

Its dirst cheap for drum rear beams and 1.1 4 stud front hubs.

Maybe around £250 for VTR/VTS ones with a disk rear beam

yeah, maybe cheaper to do that and buy some second hand vts alloys than spend 400+ on decent 3 studs.

i tried this idea...all the parts i brought from the scrappie turned out to be unuseable.

i got the rear beam for 50 quid and front struts 20 pound each

I'd personally do what I did for my sons, which was to get a whole scrap car, at least all the bits will be there, and will probably work out just as cheap, if not cheaper.
