Help please!! Gearbox or clutch on VTS?!?

  1. #1
I hit a pothole the other day and damaged the driveshaft, not a problem, ordered a new 1 and got a mates dad fitting it next week. I took it out lastnite to put petrol in and now im getting a whiny high pitch noise when going into higher revs. When i got back home i opened the door and heard a rattling noise, i put my foot on the clutch and it disapeared, take my foot off and it comes back. Ive asked a few garages and theyv all said that it would either be the clutch or the gearbox, just wondering if anyone on here has had the same problem or knows enough to point me in the right direction. cheers

i had this about april time when my car bumped a kerb backwards. got the clutch done 7 weeks ago and it was still doing it. got it re-done last week and it turned out the gearbox was fooked so needed that done as well. i think the drive shaft damaged the box when it went skyward.
the whining was only in first and second gear but it was difficult to get into first, and there was a noise when in neutral like a sort of grinding noise. hope this helps.

This rattling noise is the thrust bearing i think you will find, and i dont reckon it will be related to the pot hole incident.

The whining at higher revs is most likely the gearbox i would say and possibly either because it was damaged during the incident or the seal around the driveshaft is damaged and the gearbox oil has leaked out.

Someone else may correct me, but that sounds like what it is. Hope this helps?

Thanks for both of your replys. Is the thrust bearing something related to the gearbox? because i might just get a new gearbox put in aswell. Do you know of anyone who has a vts gearbox for sale? lol thought i would try my luck

Anyone know if you can put a vts box in a vtr? And likely costs?

Yes you can put a VTS box onto a VTR.

A peugeot specialist wanted to charged me £180 to fit the box and new clutch.

My mate done it for £60 after

    But on topic.

Like said above the rattling is your thrust bearing which comes with a clutch kit. they always go on french cars anyway.

But the whining is the gearbox, it could last a while or go pop tomorrow.

Sounds like you need a new gearbox and a clutch matey.

It's more than likely your thrust bearing if its when stationary.

Hope your having a new clutch aswell.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i have a rattling squeeky noise UNTIL i put my foor on the clutch- been told its the clutch release bearing.. also when driving in any gear the car is jerky - a bit like when a cold car pulls off in 1st gear not as bad but its noticeable would this be the clutch or gearbox?

Ok, ordered clutch kit aswell now. Looking at gearboxes from breakers yards and on ebay etc and only really findin MK2 vts gearboxes, will they go straight on my MK1 or will i have to wait untill i find a decent MK1 box?

    there both the same matey

Cheers. Been quouted 160 to fit the driveshaft, clutch and gearbox. I dont have a clue about fitting costs so just wondering if i am being ripped off or is it about normal or what? Thanks allot to all who have helped wouldave been buggered without ya By the way i looked at your predator thread quickly and wondered if you have got any further with it and rough bhp/torque gains on a vts

Mine is doing the exact same, but its been stood too. The only thing i can releate to the driveshaft story is when i changed the oil seal around it, topped up oil etc and done.

Then when i drove it i could hear a slight whine and it would jump out of 3rd when im comin off the throttle at 2000 revs.

Now its rattlin, clunckin, grindin...still driveable and the noise goes when foot on clutch. you can hear it around the gearbox too and can feel it slightly through the gearbox itself.

Iv had gearbox as 1st diagnosis but was wondering if it might just be clutch pressure plate or bearing....or all.

    Comments much obliged lol

    Much Love

Right, had the clutch and gearbox changed. Obviously noisy clutch has gone due to new thrust bearing in clutch kit, and gearbox whine has dissapeared aswell as the weird high pitched vibrating/rubbing noise when i came off the accelerator... untill today when it came back!!! i also now seem to be leaking more oil than last time on my drive. My mechanic said i need a new wheel bearing (which is the other grinding noise i can hear) does this sound like the problem ive had all along? (considerin it goes away when i turn right) has anyone else had any problems like this? as money is running out any help would be really appreciated!
