Tints

  1. #1
I am getting my windows tinted at the end of the month hopefully, what do you guys and girls think i should get done? i.e. dark tint on the back + light smoke on front etc? also how much should i be looking at for this?

  2. #2
i am one for having the same tint all round... may it be light or dark smoke.

it depends what look are you are trying to achieve mate.

i am very happy with the light smoke tints i have now. you can see that the windows are tinted but they are not soo dark that people can't see in.

i had dark smoke on my vtr and yes i did love it, but i then decided it was too dark and were more likely to be pulled over.

but remember, any tint you have on the front side windows is illegal. just go to have your fingers crossed that you never get pulled over and asked to remove them

i got quoted 140 for my rear 3 windows - and i had loads of different tints to chose from....too many choices!

gunna wait til ive lowered again b4 doing nethin like tht - shes still boat like
  4. #4
yeah i am definatly only going to get the front ones done light smoke but i was thinking of getting the back ones done to match the sun roof?

how did you pay for yours?
  5. #5
i'd go for light smoke all round, looks nice and subtle and not like a pimps car
  6. #6
is it legal to do the fronts? i thought you could only do the back 2 and the rear screen?
  7. #7
think you're allowed 25% tint on the front (something like that anyway), but as most cars come from the factory with around 15-20% tint as standard then that leaves you with around 5%.therefore if you touch the fronts you'll most likely get pulled and fined.
  8. #8
been told you cant touch any of the front windows but if you get pulled you will be asked to take them off there and then!
  9. #9
they can ask you, but they'd have to have a VLT meter (variable light transmission).
  10. #10
good point, keep that one in mind !

hi lads i have my tinits on my sax 5% at back three and 25% on the front its all about luck if u get pulled over the limit on the front is 75%. 0 being pitch black not being able to see owt and 100% being like perspect glass lol i have only ever seen one place in bradford that does 70 percent and even thats illegal u cant even tell its a tint my advice get some security film
  13. #13
its up to the police and how desperatly they wanna cause trouble for u!
  14. #14
nothing allowed on the front windscreen.

35% tint allowed on front side windows (therefore allowing 65% light transmission). cars usually come with or are advertised having tinted windows. this is merely a factory tint, which is there but not very distinctive. that is therefore the maximum allowable tint permitted on the front side windows.

anything allowed on rear sides and rear windscreen.

yes, they need to prove that your windows are too dark in order for you to take them out.

tinted windows are not something that is checked as part of the m.o.t.
  15. #15
sorry but police dont HAVE to prove anything!

undercar neons arent illegal but they will have you remove them if they so wish!

i also asked in 3 different tinting companies who deal with nothin but modified cars who confirmed any after market tints on front windows were illegal and you will be pulled for them.

its down to the police what you get away with - personally i wouldnt pay out money to be told i had to have it removed! or to keep paying out 60 quid fines whenever they fancy!

you what!?! as already said, police cannot just tell you to remove your front tints. they have to prove they are illegal by putting a light meter to it.

undercar neons are allowed when the car is stationary. they are not to be on while the car is in motion. that is what is says on the box.

yes, that has already been clarified. no tints are permitted on the front side windows.

well, a lot of people also adopt the same approach. but there are also the minority who are willing to take these risks. in my opinion, i either have all windows tinted or none at all.
  17. #17
well i also watched the police pull over every car from an event telling them their tints needed removing!

ive spoken to numerous modifiers and companies who do tints - ANY of the front windows tinted are illegal!!

as for the neons - the people being pulled by the police had turned them off prior to starting their engine!
  18. #18
Yeah i agree with that, if i couldnt get the front ones done then i wouldnt get any done at all as i think with just the back windows done it starts looking like a van ! !
  19. #19
well i cant see tinting companies shooting themselves in the foot telling people things are illegal................they'd lose alot of money!

brat boy down my road has rear tints - they actually dont look van like a saxo windows have a tint to them normally anyways!
  20. #20
alicia, im not sure why you keep on saying anything on the front is illegal. yes, i know that. im not disputing that fact.

the police attitude towards modified car owners as we know stinks. this is because of the stereotypical boy/girl-racer image.

i wouldnt be surprised if a modified car had their undercar neons on while stationary (and engine turned off) and then when they turned their engine on and THEN turned their neons off, the police would say something to you about it.

just like when you are drunk and in a car. the police cant do anything if you are in the car but if the engine was on and keys were in the ignition, then you would be charged.

edit:- and these MAJOR window tining companies will not tint your front side windows as its illegal. its the smaller companies who dont advertise who would do it for you as there is not a very good chance of the tints being tracked down to that company.

damo - u cnat comment on anyones use of neons etc!

i know how it happened and what the police did - as well as watchin police trash things bcos they were pissed off with not being able to find any other faults with cars and drivers!

stop being ya normal patronising shit of a self!

the question was is it LEGAL to do front tints - the answer is NO!

    try reading what people write!

maybe read what u write aswell as u contradict yourself everytime u type!
  24. #24
... and that question has been answered many times already.
  25. #25
so what if it has - the question in this topic wasnt!
  26. #26
Tints on the front 2 windows are totally illegal now.... up until about a year ago they would allow 30%, but now they have decided that all tints are illegal IIRC.

Different police act in different ways.... I had the gradient tints on my Saxo, I got pulled over twice, but both times they never mentioned the tints.

Now please can you stop the petty scwabbling and stop belittling each other!!!!!!!!!

erhhh, some of the things posted in this thread are incorrect.

some technical reading for you all...

    tinted windows - consultation paper

tinted windows - summary of responses

    and a bbc news article...

crack down on tinted car windows

    in that article they say...

    Quote:
Spot checks using light meters will find out if cars meet regulations stating windscreens must let in 75% of light and side windows 70%.
so, a 25% tint is allowed on the windscreen and a 30% tint is allowed on the side (front) windows.

You just had to have the last word didn't you Damo!?!?!

Please stop being a muppet and arguing with everyone about everything on the forums. You might be right some of the time, but now all the time and please stop trying to be a moderator when you're not one and don't wanna be one!

Actually now that chris mentions it, i do remember reading that as of jan 1st 2004 all tints forward of the b-pillar are illegal. this was because a car was involved in an accident with a motorbike and the car had tints- the police blamed the tints for obscuring the guy's vision.
and damo your first link is dated 2003 so just a bit out of date.

    chris...

the last word!?! this isn't some kind of competition. i posted links to real articles and real documentation regarding tinted windows. if people don't read it, then fine. but as alicia said, somebody asked the question regarding legallity of tinted windows. the question has been answered but i provided information to back it up.

    sean...

the tinted windows consultation paper was produced in july 2003.

the bbc news article was produced in february 2004, which points out what you had just said...

    Quote:
The agency was first asked to inspect cars with tinted windows last year by North Wales police after a motorcyclist died in an accident allegedly involving a car with tinted windows.

Well if this isn't some kind of competition, then why couldn't you have just left it with the question as being answered, rather than being obnoctious and argueing with people...... you just always seem like you have to prove a point, but as I said earlier.... sometimes you are right and somnetimes you are wrong... people had already answered the question.

You really are a 'know-it-all' aren't you..... or so you think, and i'm not just refering to this thread... lately you have argued or tried to belittle sooo many people and it's getting quite annoying!

I think this thread should be left know as the question in hand has been answered/argued many times over!
