Random black thing in arch

   Was doing some work on my MK1 VTR earlier and happened to find the random pipe dangling inside my drivers side wheel arch... It goes to a Black Cylinder shaped thing mounted up in corner..
   
   Does anyone know what this is?

   Purge Canistor.
   
   IIRC its something to do with venting the vapours from the fuel tank into the engine, or similar.
