Cam reliability..

A 708 cammed vts with a good remap on 50/60 K mileage, not thrashed all the time and looked after well, how would it last being used as a dailey driver?
and i mean like 30 miles a day for college and weekend driving. will the car be ok used like that? sensible driving of course. and is there much difference in life expectancy between a standard and cammed vts?

ive got a vts with newmans ph3's and its fine day to day, my car has cracked the 100k mark too. I dont really think theyre wild enough to kill your engine mate, just the usual let the engine get up to temp before putting your foot down.

yea i was told that the 708's ain that leary.
so if the car is driven sensibly and always waited for the engine to get upto temperature, theres no reason why it would drive any different or last any shorter than a standard vts?

yes as far as im aware mate. Obviously it will rev like buggery to 7800 but you wont be doing that often driving sensibly. Nah it will last same as a standard one, maybe longer if your hydraulic lifters have been changed etc, obviously its mapped up specifically too so no fueling issues. it will be fine but just remember its a saxo and the next problem is never far away.....lol

lol true. cheers for quick replies mate.

You might burn oil a bit quicker. Regular oil changes with good quality fully synthetic oil would be advisable. Depending on the ECU map, along with cam timing, will affect the idle. The engine won't idle that well with 708s on stock inlet, but the cam timing will have a fairly dramatic effect on this, as well as the map... If you find it's too bad for daily / traffic driving, you might wanna see if you can get it adjusted slightly. It it were me though, I'd get it set for optimum power! ...and a shit idle.

    lol more powerzzzz.
i suppose the shit idle is worth the power. i take it u just gotta keep the revs up a bit in traffic.

you get used to the idle and it becomes normal after time
  9. #9
do u both use your cars as dailey drivers?

i didnt no. but it thrashed to fuck when i did. lol. toads does or he did and he has s1 box on his too

haha fair mate. s1 box, is that for a better ratio? how much better is it than the standard vts box?
  12. #12
yeah. its the shortest box out of a standard car that can go in. toad will tell you or pm him. i think 1st gear was annoying him a bit as its to short. but we cant pick our ratios unless going custom which is money. personal pref but it would be quicker. youll be using more fuel aswell. a 1.4 xsi box is worth a look aswell which is the next one up. check matt yates thread though his is a 1.4 xsi final drive in a vts box

It used to be a daily driver, but I've moved house now and I walk to the train station. So much better for me and the enviroment.

Yeah, S1 boxes are great fun. They work well with 708s, as you can get into the powerband quicker.

sounds good mate. is it as simple as swapping gear boxes over? and then a remap for best performance.
dont wanna sound stupid but i dont really know "in-detail" stuff about gear boxes lol.

The gearbox won't have an impact on the map. Well, if you want to get very technical, it could have, but it's VERY minor, and you shouldn't think that you have to change the box prior to mapping the ECU.

There's plenty of threads about gearboxes on here. I posted one a while back which went into a lot of detail on how the absolute final drive affects the torque output (via torque multiplication) of the engine. To keep things REALLY simple, just think of it as like riding a bike. If you're in a high gear, it's really hard to push down the pedals, but you can go quite fast when they are moving. If you have it in a low gear, you can go like the clappers with the pedals and speed up quickly, but you won't be able to go that fast...
