Right just took my car down to garage coz lost 2nd gear and i have been told the gearbox is shagged, apparently 4 hours labour to fix plus gearbox.. firstly anyone know any decent breakers hampshire way to get a box??? which one do i go for? or has anyone this way got one for sale?? I have access for ramps and stuff so do you think i should have a shot at doing it myself?? is it a massive job? sorry for all questions but any info would be great. Thanks

    Hi Jimmy

    http://www.247spares.co.uk/

I bought vts gearbox from that site yesterday, cost me £165 including postage. Its only done 37k,so i think wasnt to bad a price... Another scrappie called me,saying they got vts box with 50k on it... I can give you the details if you wanted. That site was very handy though, cause its hard finding vts box at the mo. Anyways hope ive helped you some what :-)

    personal experience of 247spares.

    Good service

Full of pikeys sending you incorrect gearbox's.

    Would never do it again.

Personally get one off sax-p, ssc, 106owners or 106rallye.
Normally get a genuine VTS gearbox for around £120 - £160

Took mine up to PUG1OFF today to have a new clutch and replacement gearbox-though they quoted to replace the lower engine mount with a polyeurothene one they didn't do it??, and its not on the reciept either so i'm not greatly impressed but gearbox was swopped with a much better one with uprated bearings, input shaft etc, 4.6hrs labour, total bill of £588. Though gearbox is 100times better than my old one! it will still crunch sometimes, slightly, when going into 3rd. Risk you take with a 'box, and considering its a 280miles round trip (mostly motorway) i was 40miles away by the time i could pull over to check the engine mount and test the gearbox etc, i'm not gonna take it all the way back again just to have another one fitted which could be worse!?! But like i said its 110% better than my other dog poo 'box so i'm happy i guess-nothings perfect.
Labour was about £181, box was £180, both plus VAT so you can work that out!
I searched everywhere for another box and hence gave up and got one that they fitted, i had quotes of £600 for recon boxes, so if they uprate the bearings on one it must've been ok to warrant doing that?!

stick a cheap 4 speed out of a 106 1.0 or 1.1. Then it dont matter if you blow it again and final drive will give you improved acceleration
