best brake set up

  1. #1
just got my 3rd vtr in grey got big plans for it already got a bit of kit for engine an full system but it was off road for year and drove it probly 100 miles brakes are still really bad,

i have heard best opion is performance pads on standard disc, but i an tempted to upgrade the fronts i was thiking brembo off 406 coupe as you can get them from peugeot for 200 each caliper but is there a better option?

also all my last saxos have been so low on the back even after adjustment the bios has still locked the back wheels up all the time

best bet is to have a search as its covered alot lately.

you will need spacers for the brembos. I did a group buy on the wilwoods its still going at the top of this section but need 15 inch wheels.

For 14 inch you can fit 266mm discs and the relevant calipers

    brembo are good
    as are gti6 calipers

    good pads.
    avoid greenstuff

my favs are pagid rs4 blue, they aint cheap but they are brilliant pads

what ever you go for change up to braided lines
i can supply these, either as a set of four or just a front pair.

either for gti6 fitment calipers or brembo fitement (these come complete with new wahsers and banjo bolts.)

how much for a full set of braded then will it recduce brake fade alot

    best is difficult to spec!

In an ideal world the brakes would be small, light brakes, won't suffer from fade under heavy use, work from cold, with good initial bite and pedal feel, high coefficient of friction and with a low wear rate - oh and be cheap

Depending on the application / weight / use of the vehicle sometimes you have to make a compromise somewhere

the hoses are £40 in the group buy.
They dont reduce brake fade as such but they give a better pedal feel.

Fade comes from over heated pads/discs.

they don't help at all in that regard. They just replace the old hoses that may be flexing slightly... improving pedal feel

Brake fade is caused by heat so you need to look at managing that.

You can use brake pad compounds and brake fluid that cope with high temperatures, while perhaps installing some brake cooling ducts..

another solution is to fit bigger discs that act as a larger heat sink.

or drilled discs which help the heat escape.

TBH if your not taking it to the track theres no joy in fitting pads like m1144 mintex, standard mintex would do.

Even at croft with cheap discs and pads i never over heated mine, but thats because there is plenty of straight so they dont really get too much heat in them.

I did however totally fry them at rockingham after a few hardcore laps.

For sharper braking i recommend upgrading to 266mm with oem mintex discs and pads, thats good enough for road use and the odd track day imo.

On my VTR the front brakes are grinding and squeaking all over the shop and im guessing that it is probably metal on metal.

I got some calipers from a berlingo and bought some 266mm discs and pads. It cost me around £95 for all of it and should be fitting them this weekend

    Can't wait!!!

yeah qould i be better off useing 5.1 as for abs it would be better at high temps, brakes arent good at the moment car was off road for a year done over 300 miles now got better but not good enough think il take it apartthis weekend see what the discs are like get ned standard discs and a set of performance pads

i may take to track but not very often i just remember on my last vtr i did about 3 min hard driving cornering and brakeing and after 3 min the brakes had faded quite a lot and they were drilled and groved but i have been told standard discs are best

vtr brakes arent the best tbh
i mamaged to fade a set on my 1.1 (which tbh weighed very little so didnt stress them much)
i had some wilwoods on my old vts and it was the best thing i bought for the car
atm i have some 266s waiting for discs and pads for my 106 and tbh on road they should do the job quite well

i would say a set of 266s and some good pads should do the trick nicely

    as said above
braided lines will help pedal feel and also reduce the pressure you need to exert on said pedal to get the same braking force

group buy price is £40 and i can spec them to any caliper disk size combination you want to for them too
