tyre streeettching

  1. #1
i have a set of dished 15" wheels but want to do somthing special with the tyres has anyone put 14" tyres on would it work or whats the best opion also whats the diffrents in handling and speed rating going to be
  2. #2
Tyre stretching is about the width of the tyre not the radius iirc.
  3. #3
a 14'' tyre will not fit on a 15'' rim. depending how wide the wheels are depends on the size tyre used i.e 15x8 you could use a 195/40 for a subtle stretch.. or a 165/55 for a mental stretch

thats sounds good 165/55 im going evan more euro/track than the last 2 saxo so want to look good what will the wear on the tyre be like and anything to watch out for
  5. #5
    euro track??

well stretch and hard cornering are a bad combination tbh
im planning on running a 195/40/15 (maybe a 45 profile) on some 15x8j rims
that will be pretty ample stretch but i wouldnt wanna corner to hard on them at all

imo wear on stretch is the same as a normal tyre but there is more stress on the side wall so they may weaken faster than normal
  6. #6
thats somthing i was also considering as its only a 195 on there at the moment on a 165 or somthing its not gona have a wide surface to road when stretched which will hamper the performance, can you get a 40 profile on a 195 15 tyre if so who does one
  7. #7
somthing suttle what about a 185/45/15 would that work?
  8. #8
well im still looking into it all atm im not 100% sure what sizes ect but im assuming 195/40s are available

tbh it depends how wide the wheels are that will determine what width tyre you want
  9. #9
there 7 inch lenso rs5 got plans for a nice paint job on them i didnt think 195 40 were avaible but if not that wud be a good opion
  10. #10
well a 195 on a 7 wont really stretch tbh

id say a 185 would give a fair stretch
seen a 165 55 on a 6 inch rim and it had a fair bit of stretch so on a 7 it would be mental
  11. #11
yeah i think il speak to a clued up tyre garage and go for the 185, cheers for your advice

a 195/45/15 has no stretch at all on a 7j wheel

a 185 has a very small stretch on 7j wheels

    a 165/55/15 has a good stretch on a 7j

i had 165/55/15's on my ronal turbo's (7j). there are some pics in my saxo thread if you want to have a look.

for the 7 I'd have though a 165 would be fairly mad
I stand corrected though as I know curran knows his shit

    165/55/15's on 7j wheel
  16. #16
see id count that as quite hectic stretch
  17. #17
165/50 or 165/55 ftw! only tyre that looks good on a 7j
  18. #18
Gotta be 165 on 7j wheels. It all depends on what tyre ya get aswell. All tyres give a different stretch even if there the same size. Nankangs are one of the best for stretch

This is a 165 on a 8j wheel!! Pretty crazy

And these are a set of my old wheels. 13x8 with 175 dunlop SP2000

    you want
    pretty sure they dont exist

to fing out about stretch i would go on a vw forum, will be loads of info on there, just dont tell em you own a saxo, haters tbh
  21. #21
thats the sort of stretch i was looking for what tyres are you running on the ronals i cant decide between 165 or 185 want somthing inbetween
  22. #22
after lookin throw all the treads im gona go for some 165/50 , il post some pics in tommorow wen its done
  23. #23
IMO im doing the whole euro theme but i would not ever have stretched tyres after seeing my mate golf fly off the road because of cornering hard on them it made me think twice as i love to corner hard!!!
  24. #24
oh that brings me 2 another problem then as i corner hard and after spending 600 quid on coilovers i dont want to lose my handling though tyres i dont expect it to handle quite aswell

    what about a 185 on a 7 inch wheel
  25. #25
you cant drive a car hard on stretched tyres. its dangerous.

if you like the country lanes dont get stretched tyres.
  26. #26
Depends how much stretch you have
  27. #27
For pics of mk1 go to http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v623/ChrisThomas/
  28. #28
il go for a small strech 185 on 7 inch think it will still handle fine
  29. #29
hence my confusion on the euro track comment
ive not seen a stretched tyre let go but they do a lot earlier than a normal tyre under hard use

    even minimal stretch is bad
if you even think of driving hard i personally wouldnt stretch
only time stretch an go fast is in a straight line

he said he wanted stretch like my ronal turbo's. that amount of stretch is dangerous for hard cornering

thats a nice mk1 you got there. would love one myself some day

    185 what?

i dont know of any 185 tyres available that will give a stretch on a 15 inch wheel

as far as i know you cant get 185/45 or 185/40 which is what you would want for some stretch
  32. #32
think if you go on eu mania or one of the vdub forums cant remeber of the top of my head but at the top of the forum they have a sticky thread, with a link to a website that show all dif size & width wheels with all diff tyres and manufactures, help give you an idea what looks good etc, should prob come up in a search engine or sumthin
  33. #33
Why don't you just get low profile tyres.
  34. #34
stretch allows you to run a wider rim without the tyre tread protruding from the arc (its illegal for the tread to be exposed) so people stretch there tyres to get the rims poking out the side of the car
