Power Gains

  1. #1
Well basically im not after much just abit more grunt untill i have the cash for a VTS convertion, I have a MK2 V reg VTR, its the early silver top engine so its a 90BHP one, what power gains can i expect from the following

    Raceland 4-2-1
    Raceland induction kit
Straight through centre section with de-cat and no silencer
    Magnex Back box
Full service including plugs complete strip down and clean up of the throttle body

Im expecting 100BHP tbh what do you guys reckon ?

  2. #2
prob around 98-102 depending on mileage and engine wear
  3. #3
thats nearly enough for a second hand vts engine? so whynot save the money of that lot and add 100 quid. 1 vts transplant. done.
  4. #4
some people cant afford a transplant mate theres alot of hidden costs not just buy a engine and throw it in
  5. #5
all them parts you've mentioned wouldnt be that much cheaper than a vts conversion, i know when you have a vtr you want to work with what you have, been there done that, but in the end, a vts engine is a good starting point. think how much you'd need to change a vtr just to be the same as a VTS standard

even just to use a vtr box with vts lump , and loom ecu ect wouldnt cost more than 500 , not from when ive seen them advertised.
  6. #6
a good profesional conversion will set you back 1000 quid mate
  7. #7
ah right, didnt know you cant do it your self. a decent exhaust would be good as then if you ever get a vts lump the exhaust can stay there, manifold, id look second hand tbh and a service is good despite weather you are modding or not - i see a serivice a good value to car in terms of ever wanting to sell, service history seems to sell a car quite well
  8. #8
yes mate lots of costs you dont think about its gay loland you have just reminded me i need to change my oil lol
  9. #9
another thing i want to try after trying to find proof it really works is a free power unit from gmc apparently it claims to gain between 4 and 10 bhp? if its correct, the best mod for 120 quid plus vat? i think.
  10. #10
think they are for if you have a supercharger mate
  11. #11
? they have nothing to do with a supercharger, it just stops your alternater from useing power from your crank at times when your battery doesnt need it. i can see it working though,

on my fiesta i added a bigger amp alternater for audio reasons, but it used alot from the engine as it was quite alot bigger than standard alt size

so if you do the reverse then in theory it should work?
  12. #12
doubt it makes much difference mate due to no1 on hear having one lol

might make a difference if its charged less strain on motor so more left to spin the charger not sure tbh
  13. #13
thats the reason i dout it, no body buys them or has them, but i guess you'd only know if you went on the rollers. even if it added upto 5bhp, just as much as a manifold.

doubt it even makes 1 tbh mate buy one and find out tho
  15. #15
read about it a long time ago.it dosnt add any power, just stops you losing power when the altinator is under heavy strain.
  16. #16
if you are that bothered about power tho dont used your electrics in the car lol
  17. #17
vts engines on ebay for under £200.

  19. #19

haha richie2104vtr made less than standard with similar mods
Still beats every VTR it comes up against, and that was before it was stripped.

who cares about power its how it deliveres it.
  22. #22
not too sure what the crack is with the free power unit from gmc.

its not as if it knocks the alternator off all together as it is still spinning via the belt, the more you have driven from the crank, the more power that is sapped from a standard engine.

i know when i first had the charger on and not boosting / fueling, the car was sluggish due to the extra power turning the charger.

tbh i have never known anyone with a free power unit

dont worry about the bhp gains or figures, if they car feels better and drives better, who cares?? bhp gains are just pub figures anyways
  23. #23
i had 1 years ago but didnt fit it. it stops the battery charging at full throttle. sending all electrical power to engine iirc.

    deffo good tyres mate.

I have toyo t1-r's i rate them very highly tbh, wear a bit fast but i did take them on track, where they just melted tbh.

Very decent in the wet aswel, best tyres i had so far in the wet, just grip and grip where as others would have let go much sooner.

Get your self a quickshift aswel mate
To go faster strip that mo for, get some decent brakes, decent suspension.

On 106rallye they were talking about the free power unit, some say yeah it works, but is it worth it for an extra bhp or 2?

Decent intake plenty of cold air, personally a piper 4-1 manifold i found best on my VTR.

all the ones i have watched that have everything you need are 350- 500 would rather buy a whole vts and swap bits around and sell the rest of the vts and make some cash back

the toyos are good but as said wear fast (I melted a set on a 1.1)

another option is Goodyear eagle f1 or potnezas

as said it's all well a d good having power but if you cant put it down it's useless

the comment about using a vtr gearbox on vts trust me it's shit
could drop a vts box on your vtr quite happily and would make a nice little difference
