Rear Beam

  1. #1
    Hi chaps newbie here!

On the way to work yesterday a bloke pulled me over and said my rear wheel was wobbling about all over the place. I'm guessing this is the rear bearings as the wheel wobbled when i pushed/wobbled it at the top.

So how easy is it to change the bearings/rebuild the rear beam, is it done in a weekend easily enough otherwise the AX will have to be back on the road for a bit. Or is it best off buying a rebuilt one, if so where is it best getting one from?

Oh and this is on a mint 02 plate vtr with only 42k on the clock! Is it normal for it to go so soon?

    Sorry for all the questions

    Cheers

it depends what bearings it is that have gone, could be the wheel bearings or could be the axle bearing, its unusual for the bearings to go on a car of that age, athough has your car been lowered? if it has it has been done wrongly, its probs easier to get a re conned axle, theres a few ppl on here that do it, you can get one for £250 ish fully re conditioned.

    That was quick cheers!

Car is totally standard, i've only had it 3 weeks too . It came with 3 moths warrenty so do you reckon the garage should do it under the warrenty?

Would the wheel bearings cause the wheel to "wobble" when i go over any bumps because i was watching it in the mirror and it was all over the place.

Im quite mechanically minded and my dad is the fitter at his work so do reckon it would be easy enough to do it in a weekend as i need the car for monday

If you have warranty use it mate!

I would say that is defo beam bearings, my old beam did exact same thing on me, a mate was following me snetterton and thought i had a buckled wheel, turned out to be the bearings had collapsed and could pull the wheel about with easy!

Reconned beams are from 300 upwards! You could refurb yours, but if the bearing have started scoring the actual beam tube then unfortunately its scrap!
Personally i would pm piggy123 and see if he has a disc beam that has already been refurbed!

Cheers nick_106 I'll see what the garage have to say.

Are saxos more prone to it as my AX is on 93k and ive never have any problems what so ever?

when it comes to torsion bars its a lottery unfortunately! You get goods ones and bad ones! My friends old 106 gti which he owned for 6yrs, didnt have a beam swap until 3 months ago! car was then jus turning over 120k miles so it all down to luck really!

that would depend if the person who lowered the car a) did it right b) put it back together right!

PM piggy123 and he will sort you out mate. Sounds like your stubb pins are fooked, and only changing the bearings wont fix the problem!!

if you have warrenty they should replace the bearings/beam for you for free, but if not (dont see why not) then yes you can re-furb your own beam, the bearings cost about £50 for the 4 from citroen, (both sides) if i remeber rightly from last time i did mine, and that comes with the seals and everything.

as said if the beam its self has become worn or scored, you can put new bearings on and there will still be play in it, you have to get the beam plasma sprayed, and then ground down to the original size, but i have never had this done and not sure how much it is.

just get hold of a quicksilver rear beam, not as much as a vtr or vts beam. the width of the beam and the dia of the stubb pins were the same.

just remove the arb, torsion bars and trailing arms.
fit new bearings and seals to your trailing arms with the discs on, fit vts arb and torsion bars.

    jobs a good un.

my quicksilver beam was less than 50quid and it was in perfect nick

you need a big press to fit new stubbs to the beam. im going to start making some if your interested in buying any.

Cheers for the replies, I will try and get it done on the warrenty but it doesn't seem like too much of a mission to do it myself if need be.

    Will keep you updated

the same thing has happend to my rear beam and its standard 52 plate vtr with 43k on the clock. the wheel camber is that bad that the top of the tyre is rubbing the inner arch!

i got quoted £325 to refurb but i think im going to find a replacment

No guarentees the replacement wont be nackard as well tho

hate to say it but if the wheels hitting the arch, they aint going to be able to refurb that beam!

yes they are, you press old stub pin out, press new pin in and fit new bearings. i done 1 side on mine a few year ago. other side is dead now though making my new pin out of hardened steel.
