turbo setup

   Im looking into doing a turbo set up myself. im debating whether
   to turbo my vtr engine or get a vts like have always been wanting
   at turboing that before engine goes in. Ive read the threads about
   parts and how to etc. im just want some advice on what parts to
   get from what car< like what turbo, intercooler, etc and so on. as
   much help as can get would be great thanks!

   I live near you The person who turbo'ed mine has all the bits you need & he will give you giudene or he will do it for you for £500 ish, He is baced in Pilling,

   £500 seems awfully cheap 4 a turbo conversion!!!

   Got to ask yourself 3 questions really,
   
   1. How much power do you want?
   2. How reliable does it have to be?
   3. What is your budget?
   
   £500 is nothing for a turbo conversion, i take it this is a 5th injector setup running low boost?
   
   For brand new parts doing the work yourself apart from mapping your talking around £4.5k

   With all new parts £3000 is possible for a basic setup but really your looking nearer 4 or 5k for a big gain in power reliably. However you can easly spend over 10k. I have seen people do a diy setup with used parts for around £1500 but I have seen many more try and end up with a total dog or fail completely. As Saxmad88 said you really have to ask your self some important questions before starting. The £500 Cobbers quoted is very cheap. You can easily pay that on a reconditions turbo alone. A MF2 new is around £200 last time a looked as well.

   make your mind up son, bike bodies or turbo.

   id like to turbo but it going to cost more and be more unreliable

   if you do it right tho, you will have HUGE gains compaired to the bodies.. were talkin 400bhp if you have the money, try find the guy whos turboing his 106 on here hes hoping for around 400bhp he seems to no whats hes doing, get in touch

    either one is gona cost you £2000 mate, at a minimum if you make half the parts yourself.
    
    i built my own turbo kit, from scratch and it still cost me £1400 from used parts i collected over about a year, waiting for bargains.
    
    i think the best thing a guy like you can do, someone who is not mechanically minded is save up and take the car to a company that can do it for you, but expect £4500 +

    Well i was going to start buying parts and build up because thinking doing it to a vts if do go with turbo charging it. but need to know the parts to get from certain cars, etc because cant exactly get a massive turbo as just want a low boost and reliable set up, not bothered about like massive amount of hp about 160-200 would be good enough as my cars stripped anyway. how hard would be to fit to a engine thats not been fitted to car yet?

    mate in all seriousness i think you might be biting of more than you can chew, its not simple doing a turbo conversion, i spent countless hours on the internet and in my workshop, and im pretty good with cars, engine and design.
    
    if your going to do it yourself, you really need to lok into it, the practicality and the affordability.
    
    im not trying to be pessimistic or insulting in anyway, but it sounds like your quite new to all this tuning stuff, and we all have to start somewhere, but building your own 200hp enigne is not the best place to start imho.

    i do know alot about modding cars and have been for like 8 years but its just the fitting side of things id get trouble with but could get my mate to help who is in the process of fitting a 1.8t 20v engine to a scirroco. hes very knowledge full and know alot about stuff he also done bike carbs to a 1.3gt polo before. well say if i got all the parts myself, how much you think would cost to get fitted if i couldnt do or get done but i am thinking of getting a good vts engine and cleaning it up but try and turbo it by fiiting all parts,etc to it before gets fitted. i will be a while till it gets done as need to save,etc.

    ok well there is knowing about stuff, then being able to do it, there two different things.
    
    i doubt any garage will fit a miss match of parts you have collected.
    
    there are three options.
    
    1, build it all and source it all yourself and fit it yourself, build your own manifold, pipe work, downpipe ect, then fit it all and use a basic 5th jet to get the fueling right, and live maop a MF2 to get the fueling right.£1500-2000
    
    2. get all the parts yourself and buy manifold and downpipe, so no engineering at all, then get your mate to fit it and try to do the mf2 the same. £2000-£3000
    
    3. take it to a tuning shop and have a kit fitted that will be reliable and comes complete as a drive away. £3500+

    Don has the right idea to be honest, there is alot of work that needs to be done. The best and most reliable way would be to buy new parts and get someone to fit it all, or fit yourself if your good with the spanners. Then you know the parts arent buggered before you start and one less thing to put off your mind when teething problems start.
    
    To buy new and fit yourself, to get decent gains and reliability your talking around £4000

    Should i just go for a bodie set up as i dont wana spend like thousands n thousands on a engine set up. suppose a bodied vts would be good enough just would like a turbo set up but cant afford mega money as now looking at moving out and getting my own place.

    how about spend nothing on your french tin can, save the money and buy a house as the prices are uber low at the moment.

    boddies or a turbo going to cost you over 2k easily
