cam choice?

   Just got a deal on a set of R6 bodies etc from a friend that owns a scrap yard...
   
   already in talks with a company about having the fabrication on fitting them etc but now im at the point to ordering my cam.
   
   Im not fitting the cam until ive bought a pred ecu in about a month or so time, so i have a while to decide...
   
   i have an early 90bhp mk1 vtr... its running nice and smooth no problems ever.. had a recent cambelt change/gearbox refurb/clutch... also has a full supersprint system with 4-2-1 mani... BMC cda etc so ive got all the prelim mods done!
   
   whats your thoughts on the type of cam i should get? ive heard about 708s etc.. basically im using the car ONLY for tracking it and randomly taking it for a blitz on the road... i have another car for general day to day use atm
   
   (ps.. dont wanna hear any of your wise crack "buy a vts lump" bullshit k?)

   Ive got piper cams now in me mk2 vts,seem much better than kent cams.....

   If it's only being used on track i'd go with something fruiter than 708's.

   my mate has got a vtr engine runing a gtwin choke weber and he originally had a piper 285 can and made a great difference, bt after a wile he was advised to go for a catcam as they are the best possible cam for the engine etc... and it wasnt as good, the car ran far betr on the piper 285, even tho the two cams were of similar spec!!
   
   soo my opinion is piper 285 all the way!!

    right tbh going for the wildest cam might not be a good idea
    
    are you uprating the internals
    
    if not iirc a 285 is as wild as you can go (i dunno 8v properly though)
    otherwise youll need scalloped pistons so the valves dont clash
    
    also are you getting headwork
    as getting a 300 degree cam will be pointless in a restrictive head imo

    dont have any initial plans on headwork/internals.... first quarter of this year have alot to fork out for, so just paying for TBS/fabrication/CAMS/ECU etc
    
    so you recommend a 285? whats the benefit of a 285 over something like 708 or ph3 ?

    the 708s are for the 16v engine.
    
    Really you need to decide what you are going to do ECU wise and whether you want to pass any emissions tests.
    
    If you want to keep it road legal then there aren't many options available

    There are plenty of cams out there even some quite wild ones that will fit in a stock bottom end. But as KamRacing pointed out if you wish to pass a MOT your quite limited. Well unless you get a pre cat engine block and unplug a injector for the test. Though that is something I would never do and never recommend to any one, no

    the downsides are you need an ECU remap and bodies but you're doing that.
    
    Are you going to run an aftermarket ECU to control ignition timing?

    yeah ill be buying the predator ecu probably next month mate! (just gotta try organise a group buy of 5!)

    Depends on what VTR you have but. Get your head skimmed with a fair wack lopped off (down to the casting of the lumps in the combustion chamber) Cut valve clearance in piston heads (if you cant do it your self there are many out there who can) Get a GM1 cam with uprated locating fork bushing. Get uprated valve springs, piper and cat cam are good. Get adjustable cam pulley. Stick your bodies and programmable ECU on. Then spend the cash and get it setup properly on a roalling road. If you can afford it get the head properly ported as well. Be warned though they are a odd head so dont let just any one do it, spend the cash and get it done right or dont bother. Then it would be a good time to get a shorter box with the sports cluster on. You will end up with a car that will run rings round VTS with just bolt on goodies and even many that have fast road cams fitted.
