Cats to De-Cats

  1. #1
i have bought a piper exhaust and when i connected to my centre piper i noticed that with the flange clip or whatever it is that connects from centre pipe to backbox had a olive in it is this neccesary to be there or can i leave it out and does it affect performance or sound

    Regards

    Sean

best to leave i in mate

otherwise youll prolly have issues with the exhaust sealing
  3. #3
ok another thing i have a standard exhaust system from manifold to centre section but i have a 3.5 piper exhaust back box and it really really quiet anything i can do to make it louder with out spending suggestions welcome and spending money i will consider lol
  4. #4
you youve got the piper on a standard centre?
get a straight through and decat it

    itll be very loud then
  5. #5
its a mk2 vtr so the cats in the manifold
  6. #6
get a mark 1 downpipe then
thatll decat it there about 15 quid
  7. #7
really does a mk1 vtr downpipe fit onto a mk2 vtr centre section, if so what bout moving oil filter? and lambda sensor
  8. #8
    it all fits fine
no need to move the filter
and the flanges for fitment ect are all the same across all saxos

lamdas are in the same place too (allthough you can sleeve the lamda and bumg the hole with a supersprint plug)
  9. #9
leave it in other wise your exhaust will blow.
  10. #10
ok this is so much cheaper lol so if I leave the lamda sensor in will it affect noise or performance
  11. #11
wont he have to let the exhaust wear in for it to get a bit more louder ?? because my ss backbox was quiet when i first got it, and a month later its a bit louder, and a bit raspier
  12. #12
Adding the rest of the Piper system (decat and centre section with middle box) will improve the tone - not sure if it will do anything for noise.

I've got the above system fitted with a Supersprint 4-2-1. Not heard it from outside the car but inside it sounds insanely loud after 3k revs.
  13. #13
de cat will add volume to the car

sleeving tha lamda sometimes makes the car run better
but i had no issues de catting mine and leaving the lamdas in
  14. #14
The main noise baffle is the CAT. The downpipe fits after the manifold so its basically the same pipe but without the CAT on a MK1.

Your lambdas will help the car, leaving them in is the best option for mildy modified.

For pure volume, swap your manifold with a performance one and use a supersprint centre section. The piper backboxes have a decent sound. the standard manifold is the worst part of the whole engine so you'll feel a nice gain from getting it changed.
  15. #15
i have the backbox nearly 2 months still quite and i cant afford 300 pounds for a 4-2-1 so i think the idea of replacing my mk2 downpipe with a mk1 downpipe to decat it a better idea atm lol i just wanna know will it make any difference
  16. #16
why would you want to spend £300 on a manifold? you can get one off cam racing, a raceland one or a janspeed both of them are less than £160 brand new with the sax-p club discount. have a look mate, type into google kam racing. hope this helps.

I dont think you will get that much of a gain, or any more noise than some of the lower priced ones (raceland, janspeed, sportex etc) Piper is also £300, but for maybe 1-2 more bhp would you be bothered spending double?
  19. #19
yer i dont wanna spend 300 pounds lol and the other two are 160 but you need to put a mk1 oil filter on and that i dunno how to do it
  20. #20
if i had money to spend on my car

id go with the supersprint manifold, to go with my backbox
  21. #21
mate you cant really moan at a manifold that costs £160 can you really? the raceland one is £130 inluding vat isnt it?
  22. #22
i aint that bothered anyay, any supersprint or raceland manifold owners ??
  23. #23
tbh all the manifolds are the same for what they do
its just in the construction where they differ and this is reflected in the price

i have a piper manifold and i cant fault it
the 8v will clear both filters i believe

but as said if you just want the noise decat the car
it will make a big difference to volume

    you pay for quality tho.
  25. #25
i might do the mk1 downpipe for the noise then save up for 2 months and but the supersprint decat

    Sound good?? lol
  26. #26
    could work nicely mate
  27. #27
    cheers lol
  28. #28
what did you say your exhuast systems was and going down breakers tonight to find one thats in reasonable condition and if not a mk1 vtr what bout 106 old shape
  29. #29
mine is a piper backbox on a supersprint centre

the s1 106 is shorter than a saxo and the centre section wont fit (had to try and fit 1 on a mates vtr for mot purposes)

but most aftermarket exhausts are made to the longer length as its only about an inch
  30. #30
so the 106 is out the question, do it have to be a mk1 vtr or any mk1 saxo
  31. #31
you could get a later 106 one (s2)

any saxo one will fit any other saxo apart from the vts manifold is different
  32. #32
ok so are all mk1 saxos got a downpipe with no cat in that will fit a mk2 vtr
  33. #33
even the 2000 mk 2 vtr's have the downpipe with no cat, i had 1 before my 4-2-1 i think the 2001 models also have the cat underneath the car, but dont quote me on tht bcos for the life of me i cant remeber if it was 2k1 or 2k2 when they changed to put cat in the downpipe?
  34. #34
    all except the vts yea
  35. #35
well i need someone that is selling are reasonably good condition so anyone got one for sale gotta be a downpipe with NO cat lol
  36. #36
also what do i do with the lamda sensor plug on the side of the downpipe should i just put the correct size screw plug in?
  37. #37
i think i know a lad wit one ill have an ask

all lamdas are the same size so itl screw in fine
  38. #38
no i mean cos i will have standard mk2 manifold with lamda sensor in and the downpipe will have a hole for a lamda sensor as well
  39. #39
mk1 downpipe will not fit mk2 manifold, mk2 manifold has a square flange and 4 bolts, mk1 has 3 and is triangle, so you will also need the actual manifold and the downpipe.
  40. #40
i though the manifold tops were the same?

not owned a vtr though so sorry

same on my 1.1i, its 3 bolts. just thought id add that
  42. #42
what about if i take the manifold and down pipe of a mk1 vtr would they both go on my mk2 vtr then?
  43. #43
yea then it would fit, as the connection under the car is the same. might be just as cheap to get a 2nd hand 4-2-1 off ebay though, seen them go for £40 and they are stainless and would never rust, just another thing to think about
  44. #44
cool cool lol whats the heat wrap for and i wanna get one that doesnt fudge about with oil filter but if i did what do you need and how do you do it??
  45. #45
keeps heat down i think ??
  46. #46
heat wrap is just to make the heat stay in the exhaust and not go into the engine bay, therefore making intake temps lower. to move the oil filter is a fairly easy job, you just need to removed your oil filter and stem, then use a 10mm tap and tap 1 hole that is no longer needed, put a bolt in that, then you need a mk1 oil filter holder threaded bit, that just screws in and replaces your current one, sounds alot but an easy job and wont cost much.
  47. #47
well i'd rather not but if i have too i will and does anyone know any selling a 4-2-1 or 4-1 de cat manifold im looking but no such luck

  49. #49

  50. #50
this is gay im messaging lotsa ppl bought decat manis yet everyone is going offline lol i just wanna decat!!!!!!!! lol
  51. #51
has a powerflow back box a straight through centre section but ive had a dome welded into it and a cat but its still to loud for me
  52. #52

it should do just send kam a private message on here to to make sure
  54. #54
ahhhhhh too late i bought it lol i read sum threads and ppl have had no problem with them soo its allllll good lol
  55. #55
i would heat wrap it though, even though it clears the oil filter i have heard that the heat from it can melt the plastic oil filter.
  56. #56
    good idea lol
