Race Suspension

  1. #1
Hi everyone, looking to pick your brains, hope you don't mind.

I'm new to the forum, only joined last week and as I stated in the newbie thread we are building a VTS to race in the Tintops race series.

Before we even look at the engine to up the power we are doing everything we can handling wise, massive diet, brakes, suspension, anything that will improve the handling of the car, after that we may look at the engine.

We've already shed a lot of weight and nore to come and the brakes are sorted all bar the braided hoses. The next thing we are doing is the suspension which is where we need your input?? What are people's thoughts?? I have already spoken with GAZ who have made us an offer for there GOLD coilover kit which retails at £800ish, are there any other options??

    TIA

special tuning can be steep on price on some parts
gmc can get pugsport stuff iirc

i havnt has any experience with any other makes, but i would go for the gaz gold, thats what i use on my race car, and have done for the last 3 years, it is quite outstanding comapared to what other people use in my racing. what price have you been quoted for the gaz gold?

i would first of all start by seeing if there are any restrictions in the series you intend to race in i.e. no wide track, no remote resevoirs etc. then decide budget.

depending on budget it can range from a bilstein group n kit, right the way through to proflex remote resevoirs with hi/low speed damping etc.

    poly bush every thing
    uprate engine mounts
    upper and lower strut braces
    bigger rear anti roll bar
    bigger torsion bars

if they are allowed in your regs

GAZ setup is supost to be very good

Not sure if I should actually say what I have been quoted, think that would be unfair to GAZ but all I'll say is it doesn't make it that worthwhile looking at the GAZ standard set up. I know a lot of race series use the GAZ which is why I started there. Did you get a deal on them?? PM me if so.

With regards to chamionship, it's the Tintops in the CSCC. You can pretty much do what you like, but you have to remember this is entry level motorsport. We don't have a budget, but what I'm looking at is value for money, if something is almost as good and half the price then we would be intetested as money can be spent elsewhere.

in my opinion, you should get a coilover (front) setup then choose springs and dampers that go well with each other.

id say a nice spec for good value is the pugsport stuff. group a tarmac dampers with 300lb springs and 23mm torsion bars and pug sport rear damapers could be done for about £1300'ish. and i doubt you could better that for the money.

thanks everyone for the information so far. Going to look into all of this. We were already planning the poly bush all round, hoping that Kam Racing will be able to help us out with that

what you after ajustable collies or springs and dampers? one of the best things on springs and dampers would be group n shocks with some 180lb faulkner springs

edit: also depends how much is in your wallet!!

hes going full race he will want more than 180 lb tbh

Thing is with that setup is that nothing is adjustable, having the ability to set the bump and rebound to suit the drivers and track conditions can make the diffrence! You dont see other race cars with non adjustable dampers etc! Why shouldnt it on this?

im sure the gaz coilover setup is far superior to the billies. the gaz coilovers are alot more money, fully adjustable and used by alot of racing teams.

just because some people say billies are the best, dosnt mean you have to have them or your car is shite lol thats really does my box in, dont just follow the crowd.

i would rather have an adjustable setup than a non adjustable setup.
gives you more to play with and have the setup how you want it, might just give you the edge

    budget.

it does pay to have adjustable damping but for quailty units they cost lots of £££ you can get them cheap but far too much money goes into the adjustabilty than the quality of parts on the damper.

oh and the group a 106's went pretty well imo
  16. #16
Yes I want to have the option of adjusting the settings and unfortunately the budget will be under 1k, as much as I would love to have the best of the best on eveything it's just not possible.

The GAZ gold still seem the best value at the moment, anyone else had any experience with them??
  17. #17
im looking into the gaz setup so would be good to see what you think to em if you do use them

dont think ive seen anyone on here with a set yet though

Id go with GAZ but there not exactly budget shocks, but if you've got the right price then snap em up.
