Bigger brakes for 15" wheels

  1. #1
    Hey guys!

yes before anyone says i no these threads come up alot, but did a search and could not find what im wanting to no!

I no you can get GTI-6, GTI-180 upgrades etc etc

But im just wondering is there any you can get which DO NOT require the caliper to be ground down??

I no you can get the 406 Brembo's but just wondering on other "cheaper" options....

    cheers guys

New to the site obviously, but would running like 2mm spacers make much of a difference? I never realised you had to grind down the callipers, but then again I have had to see it done on 306s to fit certain wheels.

Why not just fit a 266 setup? Off the 306 Hdi, XSI, S16? I had that on my 306 and it worked well enough for the power I had, surely got to be enough on a 90 (or 98) bhp VTR?

    hey mate, thanks fot that.

2mm spacers wudnt help as it rubs on the insdie of the wheel etc.

Just basically wantign the biggesst brakes i can get under the wheels WITHOUT having to grind them down lol

and its a 90bhp, for now lol

yeah so wouldnt 2mm spacers push the wheel out aaway from the brake calipers that extra bit?

    A saxo weights what, 950kg?

I had my 306 with just shy of 120bhp which weighs nearer 1200kg, the 266 set up will be fine. Its what I was going to fit to the VTS when I find one! Its about half the price of 283 setups. I picked up my set for £40 with pads and discs.

no cos spacers would only make the wheel go outwards, like out the archs, it rubs in the inside bit i think, like the bit which holds the tyre, ill look into some 266 setups

    Cheers mate

Ah right, That sounds a bit odd to me, as the 306 runs cyclone alloy wheels which are 15" ..
  7. #7
my 283mm brake setup from a xsara never needed grinding at all.
  8. #8
What wheels wer you using them with?

    Im running TD 1.2's
  9. #9
speedline turinis. Plenty of clearance. Although I had a set of 205 gti rims and they were to small to fit over fyi.
  10. #10
hmmmm may look into these, are the discs/pads expensive??

Also if anyone could let me no if they would go behind my wheels that would be great!!

Altho ii no you can get wilwoods behind TD's without spacers...
  11. #11
nah not really, can find them cheap enough like from local motor factors.

If you can get will woods behind td 1.2's I would be pretty certain you can get a 283 setup behind.
  12. #12
well i no Pred has his wilwoods behind TD's and im sure he doesnt run spacers.....

Just want some brakes which wil give me more confidence with the car, especially with me going on track next year.

Plus will look better filling up the wheels abit!!

Are aftermarket pads/discs readily available though? as i wold fancy some mintex stuff to
  13. #13
get a set of 4 pots, they're much lighter. My 283 brakes and 283mm setup made my vtr slower than with the standard brakes and alloys.

Sure you can get aftermarket pads and disks as well, just need to search.

Have a look at my brakes in my thread for wheel filling items lol Although changing my wheels to my pro race 1.2's.
  14. #14
i would love a set of 4pots tbh but REALLY do not have the money, would settle for a set of 406 brembos for the right price but even then they aint cheap hence why im going for some brakes off a diff car.

ill have a sopy at your thread though
  15. #15
Well if you have TD 1.2s they will fit.
  16. #16
You should be able to fit 266 or 283mm brakes under TD 1.2s without spacers - pretty sure adnandunn had 283's on his white vts. I think most 266mm brakes need grinding so they don't foul the hub, the 283's off later cars i.e a 307 fit straight on.

Either way if you drop williamsvts a PM, he'll sort you out with a set and will grind them for you if need be. He did mine and they are perfect.

The mod for a 283mm setup is about 3-4mm grinded off the carrier.

This will make no structural difference to the caliper or any other part of the suspension, nor will it come into contact with anything on the wheel.

It literally takes 2mins each side to grind a bit away so the secondary hole on the carrier aligns up with the holes on the strut.

But obviously you will need 15" wheels minimum to clear the caliper once fitted.

I have had 4pots under TD rims (hispec so large caliper) and 283mm gti-6 brakes running under vts and 1.9 205 wheels

206 gti's fit straight on expect to pay more for decent pads.

Takes two seconds to grind them and doesnt affect the performance.

I have some 266mm calipers for sale with the carrier already grinded if your interested

still loads of room in my wheels for bigger brakes
  22. #22
depending on what setup pretty sure some people have gone to 301 or 315mm discs under 15s before
  23. #23
can get 310mm wilwoods too hmmmmmmm
  24. #24
266's are fine for most setups. fitted on my vts with the orginal wheels.

wouldnt bother with 4 pots unless your considering tracking you car alot or fancy making it look 'cool'
