Whining/howling at high speed only - gearbox?

  1. #1
Hi lads, what do ya reckon to this; I am getting a squeaking noise from my driver's side wheel when driving around town, and when on a dual carriageway etc doing about 50-60mph there is a high pitched whining noise that comes and goes and not always constant. If I dip the clutch the noise carries on, if I am coasting with clutch in it'll do it constant most of the time, if I pad the accelerator it'll come and go?? It as tho something is loose and rubs under certain load or on overrun. Below 50mph it stops altogether.

This has all started happening since I had some MOT work done which included replacing the CV boot on my wheel (where the low speed squeeking is) which had come loose.

I took it back and they said the squeeking could be from the cv joint, and the other (when at high speed) whining is the gearbox/diff??

It is a pretty dodgy backstreet garage and I regret takin my motor there so I don't trust their oppinion. Someone told me they could of not tightened the hub nut when they did the boot?

Could the two noises be related, and just be wheel bearings at worst?? Could the high-speed whining be the box even with clutch dipped???

    Cheers lads

i was going to say as i was reading it sounded a bit like a dodgy driveshaft or cv

as for the whine gerbox whine tends to be there all the time but will be louder the harder you accelerate or if a a high speed so it could very well be a whiny box

i dont think that wheel bearings would be the worst! lol! thats a cheap fix to your gearbox..., ide say it could be your wheel bearing but tends to be constant and more of a thump thud thud thud noise lol check see if hub nut is tight

thanks for the replies, the low-speed whining is there in the background all the time when driving around town in a straight line, is worse turning left and disappears turning right!

As for the 'gearbox' noise (above 50mph) it isn't 100% constant, and actually disappears when accelerating, it's just on overrun that it mostly happens???

iv got this problem, i think its the wheel bearings

well this is on a VTR as well (51 plate) - do you get the whining above 50 as well?

Could anyone recommend a garage/saxo bod near Telford/Wolverhampton/Brum who could have a butchers, there's none that I know of and it could be better than a normal garage tryin to sort it.

when i get to 40-50 it starts to get louder but when gun it you cant realy here it un til i let of the throttle

i would say the low speed is deffo a shaft/cv issue due to what youve said about turning
the whining may be the box but it could be the cv boot (im leaning towards the box)

i would be very suprised if it was a wheel bearing
easy way to check the bearing jack up the car and with one hand at the top one at the bottom try and wobble the wheel
