How to tell if its your coolent temp sensor

  1. #1
    i have looked but cant find anything like this
    so sorry if theres a post like this already

    to test if your coolent temp sensor is at fault do as follows;

    unplug the coolent temp plug (green) behind the thermostat, next to the battery

    remove the metal wire that helps hold it place,(this will make the next bits easyer) dont lose it you need to put it back on when your dun

    plug the sensor back in and run engine till your revs start going mad

    wial its reving high remove the plug, it you revs drop then theres the prob

    repeat a few times at high revs for peace of mind if still the same your coolent temp sensor is buggerd

    i have worked this out wial mine was playing up, have now changed it and all is good again

    if this dont help then you need to look else were ie; icv etc,

    hope this helps someone, if you are still unsure of any details in this send me a message and i will try and help out with pics etc

    if your coolent temp sewnsor is buggerd you can start the car with the sensor conected and after 2-3mins remove the plug and it will drive as normal till you get a new sensor,
    not ideal but saves it conking out all the time

    Can people who have experienced problems with this sensor please write in here exactly what symptoms your car suffered whilst it was at fault?

    sorry i should have added that;

    car will rev on its own to 2000rpm , can fluctuate betwen 700-2000, hope that clears it up a bit

    I had to change my coolant temp sensor. It would idle at about 2000rpm, and when i put the clutch down the revs would go up about 2k then go back down. I had cruise control too lol.. Changed the sensor, but it didn't solve it. So re-setted the ECU overnight and it must've programmed the new sensor or something, because the symptoms were gone

    i was told it was the blue sensor to the right of the green one?!
  9. #9
    nope its the green one

    is yours diff cause its a vtr?
  11. #11
    i changed it coz my car kept revving constantly by itself with terrible idle, it didnt really get rid of the prolem though so i then changed the idle control valve/stepper motor which completely fixed the problem.

    the coolent temp sensor will make the car rev to 2000, if it revs more than that it is not the coolent temp sensor

    i unplugged my sensor and it revved up from idle that means its ok yer?

    Now then i have had a over heating prblem but ive bleeded the system there is no blockage what so ever i think its the TEMP SENSOR but im not top sure ,,,, how do you RESET the ECU ? . . . . if theres any good explanation then please send detaild to Jacob_brompton73@hotmail.com . THANKS ALOT !

    on this, youve stated that if the coolant sensor is at fault, it wont rev above 2k?? what abou gear changes? will it hold revs?? i change gear aroung 3-4k and sumtimes it comes up a tad, ie 500rpm increase, if i change at 3k then it drops off

    can some1 confirm, the coolant sensor on the vts.gti is the sensor thats plugged into the thermostat housing?

    cheers

    hiya people could some1 tell me wat the blue sensor does the 1 near the green 1 cheers
  20. #20
    The blue one is the coolant temperature sensor that tells the ECU how hot the engine is. The ECU sets the fuel mixture based on this. It also drives the temp gauge (via the ECU)

    The green one is the same but acts as a switch and operates at 118 Celsius and lights the coolant temperature warning light.
