which cam?

    hi guys

i need a little help here, i am looking to cam my mk 1 vtr, i have been reading up for a good few months now and know what i am after, i am just unsure as to which cam profile, i am going for a catcam but have narrowed it down to 2, but cannot decide which one would be best and need a little advice from someone who has a good knowledge of cam profiles etc, here is the 2 catcam numbers: 4901105 and 4901133, the second one is on kam racing but i have been looking on catcams

    http://www.catcams.co.uk/acatalog/Ci...l_Bearing.html

these are fairly wild or so i am told and are close to the limits with out needing to go towards bodies etc, and i know they will have a fairly lumpy idle but that wont bother me.

i just want to know which would be the best one to go for?incase this might help i am currently running the full supersprint race system with raceland manifold and a induction,

the plans are blacktop head, catcams cam, catcams vernier pullie, remap at chipwizards hopefully, vts gearbox, skimmed head and maybe a port and polish but not quite sure about that, then all the other lil bits and bobs that you need i.e head gasket, seals etc.

but i do not want to go 16v, i know alot will say go for it as i will get better gains, i am aware of that, i just want to be a little different and cam an 8v, plus i just prefer the 8v for some unknown reason lol

would be great if some one could help me with bit more info about the two cams

the 4901133 profile cam needs throttle bodies or a rallye inlet and remap to get it to work and even then you will struggle on emissions if you want it on the road.

the other profile we list is 4901101 which is the best profile there that doesn't require the above mods.

Just a comment on your plans on the ported head. A good (good is a very important word) ported head on the VTR will make a significant difference. It has much more of a impact than say on a VTS for example. The real issue with the exhaust port side of the standard VTR head, its basicly the same as on the 1.4 and even smaller engines, its tiny and very restrictive. If you do get the cam from Kam he may be able to sort you a good head to go with it. I always had best results with GMC heads so they would highly recommend them as well. Longman do a great job as well.

    thanks kam and axracing.

kam i have actually been looking into a s1 rallye inlet to run with it also, but from whatg i have read and heard it can be a bit of a pain in the arse to fit and get running, i know about the drilling a hole for the tps sensor and some of the sensors are 2pin when they should be 3 pin, well i think its that way round, it may be 3pin and should be 3, either way i know you have to sort them out and change some around, but i am not 100% sure on how to fit it and sort the wiring out, could someone help me out or give me a guide on how to do it, all the other work is straight forward i can do it with my dad its just the rallye inlet we are both unsure about sorting.

also i have read that people who have fitted the rallye inlet on vtr have had a high rpm idle, would the remap along with the cam sort this out and give me a decent idle?

sorry i forgot to text back the other day about this man i was in the crimbo madness

after what you were saying before to me id get the higher cam and wait till you can get the rallye inlet and afford the map to fit it

will see a very good gain and a much better throttle response

its alright dude, i know what you mean i got caught up in that a bit lol

but yer i think i will def be looking into the rallye inlet, its just the fitting part. im going to be givenit a couple more months to get a bit more info and cash saved up and will start getting theparts then, well to b fair i havethe money now lol but just wanta bit more to be safe lol.

but yer im hopeing it will run quite well, would be quite interesting to see the results, as a mate of mine ran a similar setup on a 1.4 furio, he had the rallye inlet, newman cam which was a similar spec to the catcam im looking at and went to chipwizards for remap, and got the car dynod there and pulled 115bhp i think it was.

Made a decission on the cam yet mate?

Just for the record I was running a vtr inlet with the newman cam, hence the really bad idle which I know your worried about, i'm sure an S1 ralye inlet would have helped to tame that abit.

yo lex hows it going dude?

erm well im def goin for the rallye inlet just need to find someone to help me out with the wiring or tell me how to do it, but i am unsure between catcam 4901133 or catcam 4901105.

if someone could have a look those two cams on catcams for me a give me a hand to decide which would be the best to go for, heres a link......

    http://www.catcams.co.uk/acatalog/Ci...l_Bearing.html

also could someone give me a hand with the inlet, i.e. a guide of how to do the wiring it would be much appreciated

    look at what they require

    first will be fine
second requires throttle bodies (its saying carbs)
third is a boosted cam so is no good in an n/a motor

yer i know that, but if you go to the bottem theres a graph with a good few different profiles of cams, and if you look at their numbers the 4901105 is the 3rd one and the 4901133 is the 5th one they are both capable of running with what i want to do and they both need the s1 inlet, as kam racing sell the 4901133

but with these two cams they have slightly diff cam profiles and i just wanted to know which was better look.....

    4901105
    283 / 283°
    247 / 247°
    10.50 / 10.50mm
    2.80 / 2.80mm
    O.E.M.
    MECH: sport

    4901133
    279 / 279°
    243 / 243°
    10.85 / 10.85mm
    3.10 / 3.10mm
    O.E.M.
    MECH: F.I.A.

they both will require a ramap and it says run with tb's or carbs's but the 1133 on kamracing says a s1 inlet and ive been told the 1105 will run with s1 inlet, i just wanted to know which would be best and safest, as i know the valve to piston clearence is close, i just wanted to know which one is more likely to hit or would i get away with either cam if you get me

this is the total graph i have highlighted the ones i am looking to get in yellow................

oh they havent highlighted lol basically its the 4901105 3rd one down
    and 4901133 5th one down
  14. #14
they both look fairly high mate

might struggle with standard pistons for clearance with a 283 degree cam (if im reading the graphs right)
  15. #15
yer my bad the graph didnt exactly cut and paste as well as i would have hoped lol, but basically i got told i am ok to go up to 250degrees at 1mm of lift the one you were looking at is degrees at 0.1mm
  16. #16
you didnt say how many degrees it is lol
