power steering stopped working - most likely causes?

   daft question but do you have fluid in it for the power steering?

   i'm guessing there is as it was working fine until today.
   
   its not my car, its my sisters. she's just told me its stopped working so i'm going to have a look at it tomorrow. just hoping to get some ideas as to what it could be first.
   
   i very much doubt the fluid has been changed in a long time. she doesnt tend to pay for things until they break.

   has your car been lowered becasue apparently if it had there is a chance that stuff can rub on your power steering pump just idea but not to sure but thought i would let you know

   this happened my vts the other day. if u look around the power steering pump there is a grey relay on the end of a thick wire.this is prone 2 blow hence no pas. just go citroen nd get 1.theyre bout a tenner i think.this is defo the problem

   my power steering has gone to!!! on a 99 vts? so the relay most practicul guess gona get underneath it now and av a look!

    that happened to my saxo a while back and found out it was a fuse that was blown

    My power stearing stopped working about 2 days after me getting the car, took it to a garage and they found the problem to be that the pump wasent starting when the ignition was turned on so they fixed this electronic problem for me, dont no if will help you lol.

    When my power steering pump went you could hear a whistle/ whining noise!

    As said check you fuse when mine went the power steering failed aswell as fan blower and rear screen demister

    Mate i had this same problem afew months back on my vtr the pump failed had that replaced but the prob came back i was adviced by the electrician at the citroen garage to replace the ignition as he said the circuit run along to the pump !! fitted new locks and ignition as they come as a complete set ( transponder ) think thats the right word ?? was reset !! and now everything good now .. hope this helps

    I have an issue with my vtr's power steering, it doesnt work when you start the car but after about 2-3 mins it then kicks in and works, but ive noticed a whining croaky noise coming from the front of the car and i can assume this is the power steering pump when the power steering does eventually decide to work. The fluid is topped up too so that isnt a problem. Does anyone know the exact part i need to fix this and an estimated cost?

    i had prob couple months ago thought it was pump and replaced it, but wasnt, turned out to be a wiring fault really common on saxos
    so any 1 need i spare pump i got 1 lol

    try the back window demister if that dont work the fuse has gone its in under the dash on pas side

    check where yer steering rack is the bar on drivers side. theres 3 power steering pipe check the car aint rubbing against it

    i may well need one had similiar problems took it to a mechanic fixed my wiring fault but may need a pump in the not to distant future

    Ive recently changed my power steering pump for a scrap yard find but that doesnt work either,,,,my old pump was intermitant but this one doesnt work at all any ideas

    You shouldnt say it's "defo" anything, this is an internet forum and without looking at the car yourself it could be anything.
    
    1. Give the pump a few knocks with a hammer with the engine running. if the power steering comes on it means that your brushes inside the motor are seized and you need a new or reconditioned pump.
    2. check the relay
    3. check there's fluid.
    4. If your rear demister and heater blower have stopped working also you need to search in the FAQ section and there's a guide on how to fix it. Really simple job

    mate check the wires to the pump all connections , check for corrosion , check earths , gonna sound funny but the connector to the pas pump was coroded in mine , cleaned it up as best as possible shoved some vaseline in the plug so the damp could not get in !! lol then taped it all up with electrical tape !! and its worked ever since
