...and too much oil...

    Hi

    I made an oil and filter change and used too much oil. It is embarassing to admit that I was following the Haynes guide (which actually says to be carefull about it).
    Well, the damage is done now, I mean there is too much oil. I think I have used like 3,7-3,8 lts.
    Does anybody know the real risk of it?
    Is it possible taping it any other way than through the sump? It is almost impossible to get there without a car lift.

    iirc a saxo uses 4 litres??
    so 3.7-3.8 isnt too much

    is it sitting above the dipstick

    and sump is the only way to get it out
    jack the car up and lye underneath with it on stands

    what can't you just drain out what you don't want via the sump. And oil needed with filter change is 2.5 ltrs

    is this the thing that makes your car puff out black smoke when you drive??

    burning oil tends to be blue smoke

    well it was dark lol, happened to my mate he just drove it off, car was fine after couldnt see behind though due to all the smoke and ive been told hes an idiot for doing that. xx

    saxo uses 3.5 ltrs of oil, just drain some out the sump if your worried, check the dipstick.

    drain it, overfilled oil can do a fair bit of damage. if its overfilled alot.

    my old gti when we got it and the bottom breather was blocked and after sorting it out we thought it lost 2-3 litres of oil and put the same back in. When I went to my mates to drain it out and do a change the engine drained 5 litres of oil out!! after that 3 litres went back in filter change bosh done

    needless to say we was amazed no smoke or stuff happened, still going well in alexs hands tho

    No worries dude just learn from your mistakes. Draining the oil out the proper way is one of the simplest tasks to carry out... reconditioning your engine is a little bit more time-consuming haha

    you dont need to get it on a lift you can buy an evacuator like this > http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MITYVAC-MV7201...1%7C240%3A1318 and you just measure the end of the tube along side the dipstick and pump away untill you only draw air out, works if you do alot of cars.

    ive just drained sump changed filter and everything has taken about 3.7l for me

    edit: max is 3.5l in hand book...

    but i too apart sump etc as it has been leaking for ageds so completely re done it and sealed etc

    Wow, how many answers in so short time! That was nice. Sorry I did not answer before, but I am not still familiar in how finding my own threads yet!
    I don't understand why Alex_Vts says 4 liters in a saxo. I've read Haynes guide and some other threads and they all say 3,5.

    And yes, it is sitting above the max mark in the dipstick. It was like 1,5 cm over it the first time I looked at it, but now it is difficult to see where the level actually is.

    I have not noticed black smoke but I will look after that.

    I guess I will have to jack the car and drain the oil.

    And yes...we learn as we drive...

    You dont need to drain it all, take sump plug out, let a bit come out maybe 5 seconds, dependiing how much over you have put in and put the sump plug back in and re-check the level on the dipstick.

    Best way to get the oil out without using the sump, is simple...

    Turn it upside down and give it a little shake the the oil comes out

    They need 4 Litres, I've done many and oil change on these..

    3.8 Litres isn't enough in theory - Check the dipstick is the best bet mate!

    EDIT: Mine was 4 Litres anyway, Depends on engine size possibly.

    Remember the filter itself will hold some oil too..
