gearbox crunch help

   hi all, my gearbox has started to crunch when i change from first to second thats the only time it does it and when the engine gets warm it stops. if i change really slow when its cold it does not crunch. can anyone tell me what i need to change? thanks

   tired synchro ring on second gear, change gear oil and go steady changing up from first

   My vts is exactly the same mate, like somebody above said its worn synchro. Does it whine at all when you are slowing down?
   
   Im saving pennies now to buy a fully re-cond box

   changing the gearbox oil for a good quality brand will help with the gear change but it will be a syncro worn.

   my vts did that for a long time in 3rd on track days sum times it would jump out of gear when going down from 4th to 3rd not really what i needed at 85mph ha ha

   haha would a 1.1 gearbox fit my lump? or a different box for better accearation im putting a vts engine in later this year but im willing to put another reconditioned gearbox on it for the time been thanks

   the 1.1 gearbox would fit but the gearbox from the 1.1 will have different gear ratios to the 1.6 gearbox, just buy a reconditioned with warrenty cant go wrong, otherwise like sugggested above try just draining the gearbox, put some fresh oil in there and some molyslip and see wot happens, most gearbox problems arise becasue people never change or check the gearbox oil!

   Crunching will be caused by the syncromesh being worn out, replacing it will cost a good 150 quid! Changing the oil will make very little diffrence if any!
   1.1 box will fit fine!

    are the gear ratios on a 1.1 closer and would i get the same mpg? thanks

    No you wouldnt get same mpg, the gear ratios are quite short, my quiksilver at 60mph is pulling 4k rpm in fifth gear which is alot lol

    yep lol mine does 70 at just under 3000 rpm in 5th lol

    Vtr box is the best for mpg 90 is about 4k iirc

    ....Do not replace a VTS box for anything with "worse" ratio's
    i.e 1.1, VTR etc.
