How do i remove the power steeringram from the saxo steering rack?
removal of power steering

#1
-
#2fit a non pas rack and colum.
-
#3As said above, may be wrong but could try a 1.1 rack if there there similar, and obviously remove pump & hoses.
-
#4remove pump and plug on pump
remove flow and return pipes, drain all the fluid out and then you have a non power steering rack
will be better to get a non pas rack though, there quite easy to do just a bit fiddly with the bolts etc -
#5as pred said.
There is a good thread on SSC where they state the non pas rack causes the wheels to rub on full lock.
will get it for you if you really want. -
#6removing the pump and fluid wouldnt cause any long term problems would it? thinking of doing this to mine as i hate power steering. if the pump and fluid are removed do you still leave the ram on or does that need to be removed too.
-
#7why would you want to remove the pas?
-
#9save alot of weight? pain in the arse to drive normally though...
-
#10ive had a few cars without PAS and its not a problem, 1 had 17s on and was only heavy when parking etc.
-
#12and your not using power to operate the PAS either.
-
#14steve link to ssc thread
cant see how it makes em run unless it gives more lock?
have a 1.1 rack lying about and have played with pas stuff too
didnt notice much difference -
#15im putting a non PAS rack and colum onto mine.
-
#16Sorry to dig up this oldie. I'm looking to have this done. Where can I get a non PAS rack and colum from? Besides a breakers...
-
#18What actually is the difference between having a PAS rack with the PAS disabled and a non-PAS rack?
I figure I already have a PAS rack in my car which has been disabled so what advantage would I see by replacing it with a non-pas one? -
#19PAS rack could well be longer, ie more turns of the wheel to achieve full lock.
Non-PAS would be shorter..
(i dont know, just assuming.) -
#20I remember when I drove my friends 106 Rallye. It was fine on the roads but fuck me was it difficult to drive at slow speeds compared to my VTS.
-
#21I've been driving the VTS without PAS for months now and kinda got used to it. Felt ace on track at FCS
-

#25just parking and that,Quote:I remember when I drove my friends 106 Rallye. It was fine on the roads but fuck me was it difficult to drive at slow speeds compared to my VTS.
would be alright for me,
either gets driven spirited or 2 miles up road for work and lobbed in a massive carpark. -
#26Yeah just abit of a pain in the arse for slow speed driving. But if you're not driving much it wouldn't be a problem. Does it actually save much wait for the hassle though?
-
#27My sister has a new Mini S and I had a wee drive of it last night. It's got a sports mode button that stiffens up the suspension, and also, which I wasn't aware of, stiffens up the steering by quite a lot. It felt SO much nicer, as you get so much more feedback. Can't wait to do this now.
-
#28no PAS rack which is fucked or off is heavy as fuck compared to a non PAS rack. + you save weight and a smidge of power
-
#29So is scrappy the only way forward?
-
#30ill have a non PAS rack from my s1 rallye when i finally remove it for sale
-
#31That might be an option Ryan, thanks.
Just for clarity, is there a specific rack I will need? Does it have to be from a specific model Saxo / 106? -
#32you'll need colum aswell. and track roads if fitting a 106 rack to saxo and vice versa.
-
#33all of which will be removed from my rallye for selling soon lol
-
#35didnt think youd need to swap the column too
ive seen the s1 106 rack has a shorter column other than that i thought they were all the same
in the week ill be putting a non pas saxo rack on my 106 gti so i can update when i do toad -
#36OK thanks Alex. Which Saxo did you get it from?
-
#37Can someone please confirm what model (if any) I need to get the non-PAS and column from please?
-
#38i got my non pas setup of a 1.1 saxo (w reg)
as far as i can see its only the rack thats different no need to get the column -
#39Thanks. So I guess I'll just look for any 106 down a scrappy... Cheers bud.
-
#40any base model i think mate
the s1 rack off 106s is different to the s2 rack
so that wont work -
#41come colums are different on saxos.
-
#43any s2 flat arch should have the bits your after
-
#44Gota be a flat-arch ... Just watch out for Independence and Zest models as they came with optional power steering.
-
#45OK... So any S2 106 which isn't a 1.1?
-
#46I've used the web site: 247spares.co.uk (the same one I got my s1 rallye gearbox from) to request "a non-PAS steering rack from any model 106, "W" registration or later..." Let's so how long it takes for someone to get back to me...
-
#47Wow. It took just 10 minutes.

I have a quote for £40.25 inc. VAT and delivery!
Sound like a goer? -
#48Oh well. Too late, I've bought it.
The people on the blower sounded like they knew their 106 parts, as they said they were all the same on the series 2's... I have no idea if it's from a 1.1, 1.4 or 106, but it's defo a no-PAS rack...
-
#49It would have to be from a 1.1 as Quiksilver and GTi both have PAS, as i'm sure you know.
Sounds like a good deal tbh ... Saves you trecking down to a Scrappies and getting dirty yourself.
