Making some speaker pods

  1. #1
just about to start makin some 17cm speaker pods for the front i wonder how they turn out
    never used fiberglass before lol
    here goes!
  2. #2
aslong as you use the correct amount of resin and hardener they should turn out fine,
sand them down well aswell mate
  3. #3
ye sand them down and leave more them more than enough time to harden mate
  4. #4
was gonna say have a look at my progress thread on them but the pictures dont work

quite easy to do if your patient with them, all about trial fitting and sanding
  5. #5
post pics when your done mate, would be good to see how they turn out
  6. #6
done my first layer need to sand it down then do then second layer of fiberglass today
hate the stuff but i gave it a go and turned out ok!
does take some time to get used to
    pics up soon!

  9. #9
is it worth while making them for 13's? i know they are a direct fit in the door and all that, blah blah, but they look awesome.

hows your going, mine are looking very 'ok'
  11. #11
Mine are still looking like a piece of wood and a fiberglass box kit. Exhaust gets my priority.
  12. #12
    haha nice yeah
i might go get a center console and make a double din on it to sell after this!
  13. #13
That sounds nice. What did you do to make yours, any progress pics?
  14. #14
will get some pics up soon at gf's atm
  15. #15
after a long wait im getting some pictures up and here they are

First bit of Hardner on the fabric then first layer of fiberglass first time ever using the stuff
    its horrible lol

let it harden then cut the hole out filed the holes down and tested it into the doorcard with the speaker in it

I now decided to spread unibond on it like butter on my toast

i then decided to pull the tshirt over the 2nd pod and begin on that one and also sand down the unibond on the 1st one to get more of a smooth edge

then i have put hardener on the 2nd pod that out waiting to dry and i have also sanded down the 2nd one and about to go out to put another layer of unibond on it to smoooove it out
  16. #16
NICE! I am getting a mate to make mine for me hes done fiberglass stuff before.
  17. #17
    lucky its horrible stuff
but well worth it in my eyes
i need some sub box carpet but halfords want 25 quid for it
though the amount you get is massive!

would be easier to make for 13 cm because you wouldnt have any underhang then when fiberglassing
but if your going to go use the effort just make some for 17cm tbh mate

my cloth has now hardend and i also done a 2nd layer of filler on the 1st pod
    pic below!
cant wait to get them into my car!

    Not the best of pics..
  21. #21
i covered my door pillar pods for tweeters in tights. thick black ones from tesco, felt kinda queer buyin them, made worse by buyig ky jelly for stretching my ears up aswell. not goin back for a while...
  22. #22

tbh i probably would have got a LOT better effect if i was to go and used tights why tell me now!
i cant wait to get these in
im going to attach them to some 1.1 doorcards my pattern on my door is ugly as fuuucck
  25. #25
    retrim the doorcards?
  26. #26
    cbf
i want 1.1 doorcards / gti interior for my S when i eventually get it so i want to keep the ones in there in there for when i want to sell it
dont want to sell it with speaker pods!
  27. #27
MK2 saxo desire doorcards are perfect match for GTi interior

  28. #28
looks good thinking of doing this to mine is it hard ?
  29. #29
well that was my first attempt of doing anything like that and it turned out ok

pred are the 1.1 doorcards all plastic or they just have black carpet(y) on them instead of a minging pattern?

If your keeping your 13's then go for it, its not too difficult to do! one bonus of smaller speakers is that you will be able to aim them more towards your head which will sound better than the factory position!

Getting there bud! I have been waiting for you to create a thread to see how you've been getting on for ages, you didnt tell me you had made one already!

Have you test fitted them on the door like pred suggested? they look like they are going to be very close to the rubber door seal when you open and close the doors!?
  31. #31
    hmmm now you say it...
ive been testing them on the doorcard not whilst shutting the door
as i remember they didnt swoop down very much
    hmmm
    ahhh
'goes to check when fully awake'

That would be a bugger if they didnt have enough clearance! sorry to be the one to point out possible problems but better know sooner rather than later!

    Fingers crossed 4u!
  33. #33
nice car you got there mate ! nice turn out on the speaker pods
  34. #34
Hey Sarke, just for something to look at fibreglassing and filling wise did you look at the piccys on this thread?

    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=186725 ?

Also found a piccy i took of my pods after the 2/3 layers of fibreglass and after the filling was done and sanded

The filler turned pink as I added some resin & hardner mix over the top
  35. #35
The desire doorcards will be all plastic, think mk1 desire models had plastic and the mk2 are what i have
