Runs out of breath at about 6.5k

What would be the main restriction causing my 97 VTS to stop pulling after 6.5k? Its got a full de-cat system on and induction kit. Ive got a 4-2-1 manifold in the post and i'm led to believe it has performance cams, although I just dont think so anymore.
  2. #2
has it only recently started doing it ??
  3. #3
I havent had the car long enought to notice! I know the stock max power is reached at about 6900rpm but mine seems to stop increasing power the wrong side of 6500rpm.
  4. #4
jesus didnt no they hit 7k ? whats the rev limiter set at on the vts ?
  5. #5
    7250rpm i think.
  6. #6
my mate had a vts the same year as ures! an am not to sure about this someone els on here will tell u for defo but, i think the standard ecu rev limiter cuts in there! u can have them unlocked but this could be ure problem!

Try a good service first, plugs and oil, oil and fuel filters make quite a difference is they are all shitted up.
  8. #8
No, it still revs to 7200ish but after sort of 6450ish rpm it stops pulling and just revs to the limiter.

Can no one help? I'm hoping the manifold may make a bit of difference as its just had a service recently.

    change gear lol ?

Standard max BHP is actually at 6600rpm, so it doesn't sound too wrong to me...

Get it on a RR, otherwise you're just guessing.
  11. #11
isn't the max power (bhp) like at 6500????
  12. #12
my car has stock cams, stock manifold and just the supersprint exhaust and a rubbish cone filter, and my ECU and it pulls like a train to 7500rpm, halfway through into the red!

I think there is a problem somewhere in that engine!

Ahh, I thought it was a touch under 7k.

It's probably just because its an old banger!!

Managed to find it on web, its 6'600 apparently. Always thought it was about 7k!!

Mine pulls strong til about 7,3

Its done just under 62k, but as said its just had a service.

To be honest, tis a bit low saying that it produced max power at 6600 stock, but i'm not as dissapointed as before I thought it was nearer 7000!

Eventually I would like the car to produce max power around the 7.5k rpm mark (the whole reason I went for a N/A car!), how would I go about this?
  17. #17
Thats about normal.. Mine pulls all way to 7.5k but soon to be more
  18. #18
what induction kit are you running. Is the filter small / Dirty / getting a good airflow.

Could be worth getting the cam timing checked.

your starting to drop off the power band at that sort of revage.
I always change and 6.5k anyway.

If it had "performance cams" and a remap it would more then likely pull like fuck all the way through.

Give it a service, make sure filters not clogged up, change fuel filter and plugs.
Stick a tank of v-power through it, when mine ever ran like shite, always stuck a few tanks of that stuff through.

Mine doesnt rev as good with tesco fuel in.
Also could be down to the weather

Just been out for a run and it is more like 6600rpm that it runs out of steam anyway.
The fuel filters months old, the plugs have been cleaned recently, might try V-power

I bought it off the previous owner on the assumption that it didnt have performance cams, the guy he bought it off told him he 'thought' it had performance cams in so thats why I "thought" it might. I'm having doubts though now.
I know its never been remapped.

How can I check that it has got performance cams in?

Its got some 'universal' steel airfilter on the end of the throttle body, its clean enough but theres not much airflow to it. I've got a new induction kit on the way

Cam timing is a good one, i think its out by a country mile, idles ok but struggles to start smooth when cold.

Thanks again for the help guys, getting rolling roaded March time with the rest of the Yorkshire lot so that will tell all!
I'm wanting to use this as a track car so i need to get it to pull throughout the rev range. Best mods?

My max BHP is @ 7200rpm. If I can, I will shift at that RPM, which drops me roughly into the max lb/ft RPM area. In the lower gears, it's easy to go over 7200 RPM and still feel like you are accelerating nicely, but 4th and 5th are a different story, as it's much easier to notice the power dropping off.
  22. #22
    its like my old vts
struggeled badly n fourth and fifth
but 3rd it felt like it pulled well all the way to nearly 7800 (that was limiter shifted just before)

but over around 5.5k it felt sluggish in the higher gears (even though peak power was at 6800)

might need to clean the injectors? Sounds like a fuel issue

Hmmm. The power should drop off after 6600rpm, and you're way past the max torque at this point too, so it sounds fairly normal to me. The RR will tell all, so it's good that you are taking it on one. As people have already said, a good service: air filter, plugs, engine oil, fuel filter, and even gearbox oil will be a sensible move.

    I'll update after the RR

I'll give it a good clean through beforehand. Best product to clean the injectors?
