heatwrapped mainfold or not?

I have a saxo vts 2002 was reading up on heatwrapping manifolds, found it reduces the under bonnet temperatures, however have also read it creates turbulance in the manifold and also may crack the manifold.
so are they any good for your car? and do they improve performance?
  2. #2
i dont know much about the subject but yes it keeps the heat from the engine bay and sending it back ot the manifold the hotter the manifold the faster the gasses flow there for better proformance but about the turbulance in it i dont have a clue sure some one will help ya tho matey

in my honest opinion and i will probably get slated for this, if you have a stainless manifold wrap it, if it is normal steel i wouldnt, as the heat wrap can hold water in and cause the manifold to rust/brack quicker

Has been known to crack mild steel manifolds, but not so much on stainless, as said.

The theory is that they keep the gases hot, so they flow better, and also keep underbonnet temps down, letting it suck in colder air.

mild steel manis can crack with the heat if its wrapped

it keeps the exhaust hotter and allows the gasses to flow faster
aswell as keeping bay temps down

    EDIT: beaten by titch

mild steel are for poor people anyway lol i heard they crack even without heatwrap. and as above it keeps the heat in, and hot gases flow faster.

so gmc manifolds are for poor people??

Lol no not really so. Generally stainless manifolds crack as its so brittle. Mild steel can actually take a lot more vibrations and denting. Its only in the long run mild steel will rust and fail but generally people will just ceramic coat them to prevent this and reduce the heat radiated. Heat wrap will tend to make mild steel rust.

So Stainless mani is the best to go for but ceramic coat it!

Is the ceramic coating stuff the spray cans you can buy for mani's? are you better off using wrap after the ceramic coating?

If you buy a decent quality mild steel manifold it will outlast your interest in the car. A couple of Janspeed owners have still got a working manifold after 6 years. I'm sure the GMC is of similar quality.
Ceramic coating is the best, but its very expensive. you dont need any wrap if you get ceramic coating.

i dont know many people with a GMC manifold, i was gonna buy a mild steel one a while back and was told by a lot of people to steer clear basically.

I always thought it was Stainless Steel manifolds that were prone to cracking? Mild steel are more malleable, surely?

Thats what ive always been told due to the heating up and cooling down of the mani.

The stainless mani on my starlet cracked. it also depends on the quality and grade of the metal used.

I believe the raceland fannymoulds have a 5 year warranty anyway

i wrapped my vtr raceland manifold when i had it and it really reduced the temp in the engine bay. I sprayed the manifold with heatproof paint and then fully wrapped it with thick wrap. Was brilliant if im honest.

I am thinking about wrapping my vts 4-2-1 manifold but just being put off as the throttle bodies have a good cold air source. Just the hassle of taking the manifold on and off now

Ive heard it makes it sound raspier too?

So when you say ceramic coating do you mean that you spray it on yourself before you fit the manifold or do you have to have it professionally dipped or something? Whats the process and costs involved? any idea

Should make it sound louder as the exhaust gasses will exit faster if the heat is kept in the pipes! but changing from std to aftermarket will change the sound in the first place??? someone correct me if im a mile out!

    your not far off
they do make the gasses flow faster from what ive researched

cant really tell much diference in real life
i have my whole exhaust wrapped and it does lower temps and the backbox does get very hot as all the heat is dissipated there
its now on its 3rd rear bumper and its melting it quite well lol

i've never used a spray but it wont be as effective as a professional job.
The professionals dip the manifold so its coated inside and out - no chance of any rusting at all and keeps the heat in really well.
Probably looking at £300 odd quid I would have thought though

saw this thread and thought i would add ..... is there any set way you should wrap the mani or is it better to get someone with the know how to do it for you ?
  21. #21
We have a guide on our site which should help.
Its a lot easier with lockwire though which is what I use now.

Theres certainly a knack to it, though its a bit messy (wear gloves)

    thanks alot

Im not gonna wrap myne past the cat/sports cat then, as replacing bumpers for me is not an option!

Hmm thought it might be dipped to get the best results tbh! but £300 is more than id be paying for the 4-2-1 in the first place! il stick to the vht paint and heat wrap and then poss vht paint again, cheers for letting me know!

This wired heat wrap is it exactly what it sounds like and has wire in the fabric to keep the shape better? and how much is it compared to std heat wrapp?
