Secondhand gearbox with only 4 gears?

  1. #1
Hi, I have a 1999 Saxo West coast - the original 5 speed gerabox broke! I have replaced it with a box from a later model but I am unable to get a 5th gear. Is it possible its a 4speed box, do they exist for Saxos... the bell housing is slightly different and there are two balls on the main shaft for the gear linkages but only one on the old box?

    early 106 1.0s had a 4 speed box

however on ther linkage all the saxos ive seen have had the 2 balls
try the linkage on the other ball and see what happens

Hi, ok this is teh box I have put in my Saxo Westcoast - I think its from a vts (found one on ebay thay looks the same.

Is it a 4 or 5 speed and what ball should I put the linkage on

the box shape and design is similar if not the same throughout alot of saxo/106 boxes, although it does look a little different size compared to my vtr and vts box

A close up - sorry not sure how to edit yet!

right basically those two balls adjust the left to right movement of the gear stick in neutral. so put it on both and see what feels comfortable to you

Thanks I will try that - the problem I have is that I only get 4 gears - fifth doesnt seem to be there .. could moving the linkage fix that - not sure if I have a duff gearbox, a 4 speed box or if the linkage needs adjusting. All other gears are fine and the box is nive and quiet - bloody cars!

if you can get reverse to me that would suggest you have a 4 speed box. but check all linkages in the engine bay and under the car are fine to make sure

Yes can get reverse easily. Did VTR/S come with 4speed manuals?
  13. #13
    nope they didnt

Ok last question then - I am in danger if becoming a pain in the arse. How can I check if its a 4 or 5 speed box or if fifth is no good..?

The box is on the car..

You wont be able to look at the box and tell unless your an expert..Even then you would struggle..

It'll have a code on it somewhere..Get that code and post it up, there's a section on here or SSC with gearbox codes and what box the code relates to..Sounds like you have got a 4 speed box from an AX or 106..

find the code on the box and have a look on here for gearbox codes and that will tell you

No plate or code that I can see - bollox!

i think the codes are at the diff end of the box

easy way to tell, on the end of the box is a black metal cap. this is the 5th gear housing, undo the 3 13mm bolts and look inside, if there is 2 gears with a bronze selector then its a 5 speed thats fucked, if its empty then its a 4 speed

the 5th setup looks like this inside the red circle

there are all the same size as the caseings are all the same, if the bell housing is different do all the bolt holes line up as mk1 ax's have a different bell housing and alot of them were 4 speed
