I have currently got a 03 vtr which use everyday but am thinking about building a track/weekend car. Looking at a s1 rallye 1.3 or another vtr mk2 because to much to insure a gti/ vts aswell as vtr. What mod would you suggest on a budget? well mean just exhaust, etc for either because dont want to be spending a fortune on things! im going to get the car for about 1k and then what ever can afford to get from there on!
Building track car!

£155.75 Raceland manifold http://www.kamracing.co.uk/manufactu...106-8v-13.html
£32.83 Green panal filter http://www.kamracing.co.uk/kam-racin...-6-8v-153.html
£207.00 Apex kit 35mm http://www.kamracing.co.uk/manufactu...saxo-1119.html
and tyres, brakes. -
#3sort the haneling first mate
good dampers and springs
bushes throughout
and some decent brakes and tyres -
#4as above.
strip it out
suspension first with poly bushes all round
some pug gti front discs and calipers
then go for the engine mods
a balanced car can out perform many higher powered cars in the twisty bits

#5Exactly what they said ^^^
Make it light, nimble, and speed will come with it. You cant beat the rallyes for a cheap and fast out of the box package
-
#6Ye but what would be better? vtrs are never and bigger cc and nicer but the 1.3s seem quite quick for a 1.3 and short ratio box too but im more towards vtr because mine looks mint and would like another aas look smart with a cage, etc. What would be quicker? tuned vtr with rallye box or tuned 1.3 rallye???
-
#7the early 1.3 rallye has 100bhp.
the older 1.6 rallye has the same as the vtrs 90 or 98bhp??
i think the older rallyes are lighter as well and also have a closer ratio gearbox
-
#8i've taken a standard 1.4 round a track.
despite the lack of outright speed I was not the slowest and nor did I care.. -

Would rather a track car that looked good or went well? -
#10When my mate tracked his 106 with a VTR in it its was just fully stripped and decked, on good suspesion, standard apart from airfilter and exhaust, and it was stupidly fast, once stripped it becomes a go-kart.
-
#11Ye thats what id do. Completely gut interior, etc to get weight down and put some good suspension on it, light wheels or vtr ones or rallye, gti brakes, strut braces, supersprint system and raceland mani, raceland/green induction, buckets, race wheel and cage. and maybe rallye gearbox.
-
#12i dont think many of the 1.3 rallyes will still ahve 100bhp there getting on a bit now.
-
#13there are some very well kept examplesQuote:i dont think many of the 1.3 rallyes will still ahve 100bhp there getting on a bit now.
and some engines if maintained well can gain a few ponies from things freeing up ect
so you could probably find one thats still 100ish -
#14I may opt for the vtr i think! Most likely to handle better and be more powerful and think if could maybe find a mk2 vtr in same red as mine would be good! Or either black.
-
#15they will handle very similarly
and i doubt the vtr would be much faster without mods (it will eventually make more when the mods get into higher specs)
personally id go rallye
you can find ready track prepped ones aswell -
#16old school ford fiesta
or an old school gti. or jus ditch vtr and by a vts and use it all the time.
-
#17hes asked about a vtr or a rallye
not a 16v
and if you mean an old 106 gti they never did a 16v s1
people have converted though -
#18I want my vtr for a bit of luxury as its stripped out now but putting interior back in and keeping seats and going to get another vtr as a fun weekend car. I love the look of stripped out cars but its a bit of a pain as a daily but my vtrs had a bit of work so was going to use that for striiped out and get a cheap car for daily say another vtr or similar! but people have told me to keep vtr as daily and use cheaper one for weekend car/track!
-
#19its just better to have a cheaper car for track incase you bin it
but another cheap one and put your bits in it lol -
#20Newer 1.6 rallye (the S2) is 103bhp mate, with a slightly longer/more useable on the road 'box.Quote:the early 1.3 rallye has 100bhp.
the older 1.6 rallye has the same as the vtrs 90 or 98bhp??
i think the older rallyes are lighter as well and also have a closer ratio gearbox

S1 Rallye would be good, very light (mates was 815kg on weighbridge with full interior, his 16v s2 stripped is 870), revvy engine, short box, very good for twisty circuits. -
#21So you suggest a 1.3 rallye s1? Are these as quick as a vtr as ive read there are similar? What engine mods would you do to get it going abit quicker? I would prefer say vtr to be nearly as quick as a vts so of 0-60 times if relly stripped, etc. Id probably most do with full system, Induction, decat, mani! Maybe a bit more depending how much am going to spend on tuning. Would i get better gains from the vtr with those mods i take it? And the vtr would be quicker than the rallye with the same mods like strpped and breathing mods and rallye box?
