No gears.. A bang, and car in garage :(

    Hey guys n' gals.

Was on my way home from work today, and I was in first gear going into second coming out of the works carpark nice and slowly after a long/shit day at the office; and the car wouldnt go into second, put my clutch out and then back in again and tried to put into gear again, As it went in i heard a bang and all of a sudden i lost all my gears

Mr RAC came down to help me, and they had to tow my car to my local garage from the rear, as the front was too low. (as many of you know the rear is standard again)

He said it was the dif and its probably put a hole in the box.

Any ideas how much this is going to cost me? Expecting a call from the garage sometime this week to let me know on a quote.

Just one thing after another with this car

    Cheers

this happened to me in the vts, i was doing 30mph and the car jumped and skidded to a hault!!

when i got the box off, the diff had throw bearing rollers out of the bell housing!
quite common, easy to sort, you just need another box. just need to check the clutch to make sure its not coverd in box oil.

scrappys have loads of MA boxes of the TU saxos, you can fit any MA box. some have better ratios than others, but they dont make a massive difference

Thanks mate. Made me feel alot better about it! How much do you reckon I would be looking at for the new box? Just roughly

anywhere from £50 to £300 depends what you want

my vts done this twice, just get a second hand box and go from there, you may need a dive shaft as i did cos mine was knackerd big time

i was lucky and it was just the box.

it was a mare as you couldnt push or move the car with the diff blown to bits lol

it was lucky, i had a spare gti box in the garage.

i would just find any box i could get from a scrappy mate. vts, vts or gti etc

Garage rabg today. Theyve got a box thats done 50k so not too bad, not off a vtr though. fitting it tomorrow. £250 all in. If it doesnt have a VTR box in, will it make it slower and pull away more like a 1.1 ? lol.

depends what box it is 1.1 1.4 vtr or s

Too late now mate. Its been done. He rang before and said it will be ready at 10pm. What would be tyhe difference between a 1.1 1.4 vt r/s?

check the gearbox ratio guide mate, potentially with a lower fd you may be a bit quicker.

OK mate thanks. So what does FD mean? and is a lower FD found in which gearbox? the 1.1?
