Spray my car with a can from halfords ?

  1. #1
i want to change the colour of my car but can relly afford to get a proper job, wondering if i brought loads of spray cans and just spreayed it on would it look any good, if any 1 has any advise would be great, or pics

    thanks DAN DAN
  2. #2
there was a guy on here who did it with cans iirc not sure though might have been another forum. Would look much much better done properly though.
  3. #3
nah i think it would look prety crap to be honest
  4. #4
i very much doubt you could get a proper bodyshop finish with rattle cans
  5. #5
Sounds like a Jeremy Clarkson job to me.
  6. #6
It has to be preped and alsorts mate. The finish even if work hard will not be that good
  7. #7
this is it currently, wouldnt mind it black

  8. #8
have you been watching top gear?lol

would look shit mate save up an get a proper one
or sell it an get another one
  9. #9
Silvers still a nice colour mate, and the black rims suit it
  10. #10
i wouldnt do it from a can

if i had the balls to do mine i would buy some paint and use a spray gun at least
  11. #11
sell it and buy a black one

  13. #13
you no its gonna cost you like £500 in cans... there's a guy round my end with a Renault coupe thing its been about 6 diff colours he does it himself with rattle cans, looks dreadful
Get a decent spray for about £600 just basic try some small body shops they will be open to offers as there not getting much work say you will supply the paint and just pay for them to do it or something lol befriend a painter

    You'd spray a white saxo
    White saxo's look so nice!
I agree with the person about the spray gun idea, but careful mate, fuck up and your car will depreciate like no1's business.

personally i wouldnt ruin a perfectly good car. if your not happy with the job you do and decide to sell it, you wouldnt get nearly as much as you could get now.
  18. #18
You could do it, in theory. But unless you are awesome at painting with cans, it will look crap when its done imo.

Also, as pointed out, unless you have all the stuff already, it'll cost a fair bit. You have to factor in all the prep materials as well as the paint. Stuff like scotch pads to key the surface, or the paint will just flake off. It would also need rubbing right back to get rid of all the old polish etc which may take you a while. Then theres flatting and polishing to get the new paint all nice and shiny.

If you don'tknow what you're doing, I wouldn't attempt it. Just save up and get a proper respray imo
  19. #19
buy a bonnet from your scrappy and try spray that...

you might find you change your mind after!!!!

+1.. He sprayed his VT kit? Came up with abit of over spray etc etc and was VERY expensive. Looked a good job though. It was for a 1.1

Using spray cans? WTF... Why would you want to change the colour anyway. Shouldn't you had bought a saxo with the colour you want?
  21. #21
mate, im shit hot with rattle cans and sprayed a escort in red (no metalic) and it is a nightmare to do a hole car, totaly diffrent from doing a kit ect,
spraying metalic is a lot harder and i wouldnt atempt a hole car in metalic, it will look shit,
metalic black is one of the worst colours to spray,
if ya whant a black car buy a black car
  22. #22
and the end of the day m8 you get what you pay for? your choice tho dude
  23. #23
dont attempt it mate! get it done properly!
  24. #24
might as well sell it for a black one or even swap if someone is up for that ??
  25. #25
Could do a satin finish using cans. But if you want shiny paint that looks nice I wouldn't bother.
  26. #26
I would imagine you would find it hard to get a fair, even sprayjob

Save up and get it done proffesionally

J.o.o.i - How much does a full spray job cost?
And do you need to notify your insurance company?

Depends on the size of the car and how much work (i.e. prep work etc) needs doing.

Only need to notify DVLA so the colour can be changed on your V5, may have to let insurance know its changed but it shouldn't alter premium
  28. #28
I wouldn't bother unless you gona spray it in matt black.
  29. #29
This car was sprayed with rattle cans

  30. #30
^^ I bet the clear coat was applied with a proper gun though.
  31. #31
No all done in a day, a quick job
  32. #32
i don't think it will be worth it, you will get a poor finish and wish it was silver again
  33. #33
Did JK really rattle can his lambo?
All that cash, would have thought he'd have had it done by a pro.

As for doing a car yourself, you need to follow the "KISS" rule: Keep It Simple Stupid.

Basically, if it looks hard or is a big job, get a pro or lots of practice.

When I had the GunMetal 106 Whore thing, we took it apart and rubbed it down to metal and sealed with a layer of primer before giving it to a reputable bodyshop to spray.

The whole cost came in at just north of £2000.
£500 on cans may sound cheap but you need to factor in how many cans and how many times you're going to think "Opps. I've just seriously ruined the potential re-sale value on my car!"

Respraying is a waste of money as a modification, you can never get the cost back when it comes to the sale of the vehicle. As others have suggested, Buy Black to get Black

no way with the spray can, even touch up jobs with a spray can look dodgy, save up for a few months and get it don proper, else you'll just get a crap looking finish, my mates a mechanic and tried it on his corsa going from silver to blue, looks gay and cost him a bomb, ended up getting it done proper so cost him twice as much, but as they say - "Hi Ho Silver!!"
  36. #36
Why not mate. It's not worth much with that mileage and age so give it a go
  37. #37

The photos were taken at the insurance place / scrapyard when it showed up after the crash.
Dents are expected to be fair.

The car was also featured in a video for one of his songs.

Well it was ok for me! i resprayed inside the engine bay, as it was past its best and everything, and i got a decent finish from it, i suppose it depends on who's spraying it lol

not realy. doesnt matter whos spraying its still a watery paint. the quality of the finish depends on whos sprayin.. not the quality of the paint itself.
glad your bay turned out well
  69. #69
absolutely no way mate! honestly, spraying is the worst idea ever, as you get dust and dirst trapped under the paint and the paint drips and shows up really badly once dried. Avoid at all costs
  70. #70
respect if you give it a go, have you thought about maybe just spraying the vtr kit black? going for a two tone maybe, could do it inside if you took it off, when i say inside i aint adviseing your house lol
  71. #71
Try a college. Body repair place they pratice on your car normally about £200
The tutors normally finish it off as well so get a good spray job contact your local ted college
  72. #72
    don't!
you need constant pressure when spraying to get a good finish.
cans start to drip if you use em too long, they lose pressure and the overall result looks like crap.
keep your car the way it is, get a decent respray or sell it and buy a black one.
    cheers
  73. #73
Do it, it'll be funny tbh.
  74. #74
i reckon you would get away with matt black, thats about it though..
  75. #75
i spraed a nova matt black once with cans and it was quite good and that was my first time at spraying
  76. #76
If you really want a colour change then save up and get a proper job done, it would take forever without the rite tools. A compressor air sander and spray gun would be essentials in my eyes to even do a half descent job. Good luck with your choice

  85. #85
dont do it with cans !! you can get a spray job done for 500.. it would cost the same with cans
  86. #86
it will be very patch so dont bother trying and would be cheaper to buy a compressor gun and paint than all rattle cans
  87. #87

Your meant to leave it to fully harden which takes about 14 days, then cover it in 4~ coats of laquer, then that harden, before attempting to jet wash it, silly idea that
I Have just done half my tailgate with a rattle can, it looks good but I used to do graff so I know how to control a spray can very well, and how to avoid drips ect, everyone needs practice, btw halfords paint is the dogs nads for blending in.
