Is the saxo jack OK?

  1. #1
Im going to start spraying my alloys 2moro, and i've just been looking through the haynes saxo book and it says that the jack that is supplied with the car isnt very reliable etc.

Are the jacks and axle stands from halfords any good? I looked on the website and for both it will probably cost about £50...and are these easy to use? I don't wanna do something wrong and it collapses and smashes the car up lol

    thanks.

you shouldn't leave the car just on the jack... get some axel stands for defo. you pay for what you get so £50 sounds enough to me imo lol

    the saxo jack is rubbish.

    the halfords ones are good.

have a look around though you may be able to get them cheaper.

okeydokey thanks for the fast replies

The only places we really have around here is a halfords or wilco..wilco is normally cheap for primer and things like that but i looked on their website and jacks are pretty much the same price, if not more...or theres always argos i suppose lol

    hopefully all goes well!

Im getting that this week on offer for 50 quid in my halfords.

Used the jack before its good but a bit chunky to get under my car so u have to go up a bit on the standard jack then put that in and lower it the same way!

Part from that, hydrolic jack axle stands and trolley for 50 quid, cant be too bad

at least put the car on stands
we regularly have cars in the air at a garage we rent
we use 3-4 ton axle stands and a 3 tonne jack aswell as a clarke low jack

best to be safe as imagine the car falling
itll ruin a lot of stuff
  15. #15
As said, saxo jack is shit, i was jacking mine up once last year to put the axel stands underneath and the threads just stripped and dropped to the ground - good job i wasnt underneath!
  16. #16
argos do a cheap low entry jack

and think halfords do 3 axle stands for £16
  17. #17
get some good garage jacks. i got one too. cost me only 40. can carry 2 tons so no prob for a saxo

nothing wrong with the jack and stands from argos. I have used them plenty of times on my vtr and have had no problems.

I have even changed the clutch with these and problems at all

where are you supposed to put axel stands? ive got some and the haynes manual says put them under the jacking points. but you need the jacking points to jack the car up in the first place, im confused!
  20. #20
if you dont wana go to hal(rip-you-off-alot)fords try BMS, they have good axles stands and jacks at a good price and i rate them very well.
  21. #21
As you look under the car, you jackup one side high enough to get the oppoiste side up to slide an axle stand in and then do the same on the other side, or jack further in towards the middle of the car to put the stands in.

£12.99 from argos and more than enough for a Saxo to be put on:

So glad i caught this thread, you automatically presume that the jack that comes with the car is good enough. Thanks for the warning, il get it changed asap lol

    Not really.

Isn't the Saxo Jack only really to be there to swap tyres around?
  26. #26
Yeah, but i have used it for that, but now im not sure if i even want to do that, i dont fancy it rolling off it lol
  27. #27
I went out and spent £80 on a quality jack and its honestly the best thing i've ever bought! The amount of use I get out of it is unbelievable and feels so much more safe than the other jacks I have. I'd highly recommend one to anyone, mine just fits under the jacking points without chocking the wheels up!

  28. #28
I use one of these, with argos axle stands.

Clarke make good trolly jacks. Nice buys

Ive got the halfrauds one, and the RAC axle stands, and theyre both great. Had the jack for at least a year and its never given me any problems, still as smooth as ever. And one thing of theirs thats well priced too. Work on the car at least once a week, always something going wrong, something that needs tweaking or something new to fit lol

nope, luckily it wasnt that high off the ground at the time

if its just for spraying the wheels just do them one at a time and put the spare on while your doing a wheel lol
  33. #33
I recommend putting your wheel under your car after you take them off.
That way if an axle stand was to fail, you limit the damage as your car isnt going to drop to the ground.
