Important! : Group Buy: Alloy Crank Pulley...[Update, Orders being taken! PG 5 Post 81]

  1. #1
I have spoke to John at GMC about getting a discount on theese, he said he did try a group buy on SSC with not much interest but said if i can get between 5-10 buyers then he will knock £10 each!

For thoose who dont know what theese are, they are the pulley attached to the end of the crank that drive the alternator. Basically a standard pulley weighs about 1322grams, GMC pulleys are made of alloy so they weigh in at 355grams! Almost a kilo loss, so now you might think whats the point in this, well basically losing weight of the crank has the same effect as losing weight off the flywheel! Making the engine easier to rev and releasing a small amount of power that otherwise would be used to drive the pulley!

This is what they look like!

Another thing to think about is a standard pulley from Citroen costs around £120!

    Final Price-£75.90 inc Postage.

If youre interested please put you name down!

OK i know total sweet FA about this so no laughing..... If they're made from a lighter material are they likely to be less durable?

Its made of Billet Alloy so is very strong and durable, only reason Citroen didnt use alloy is down to cost! Now although this is cheaper than the citroen part i bet it wouldnt conform to their profit margins so they made it out of something cheaper!

Cool! This is something i might be interested in, but just not at the mo! Ill keep my eye on it tho!
  5. #5

  9. #9

There is a complete kit on ebay (made by Colin Satchell) for £100 delivered - that contains an alloy crank pulley, alloy alternator pulley and belt. Worth a look.

Seen thoose kits but never spoke to anyone with one!

Heard nothing but good things about the GMC pulley!

I have a QEP L&B flywheel and these pulleys lose more weight off the crank than the flywheel does!
  19. #19
I have colins kit on my 106 race car - no probs at all (its the same thing as GMC one but with an extra pulley and belt)
Worth sending him a message through ebay as there are spot on.

Do you know the weight of the crank pulley in this kit, as this is what makes the GMC one so good as its so light?
  21. #21
The crank pulley is 215g and alternator is 85g
  22. #22
@Nick, How easy is it to change the alternator pulley?
  23. #23
slacken belt off, undo 3 bolts and its off.
  24. #24
The pulley thats on the alternator?
  25. #25
Alternator needs to come out which is pretty easy. Ideally you need an impact gun to take off the pulley nut unless you hold it somehow but not that bad a job.

LOL, you think they are made differently? Colins are made on a CNC machine and are no way any different to the GMC ones!

I was only trying to give you all some info on others about which like i said use and have no problems with.

Ditto. I think they must be able to budge on price a bit, cant seeing them costing much to make. The GMC ones a crazy price for one pulley

Yeah, pretty expensive for what they are. I'd say £70 is a bit more realistic.
  51. #51
i would like to join in the group buy if finally it is done
  52. #52
i would just like a standard 16v pulley to copy, anyone has 1 spare let me know.
  53. #53
look mates i have one cuestion , the pulley doesnt have like a type of rubber? how do you get that rubber to the gmc pulley? or it comes with it already ? because once i broke up the cranck pulley and the mechanich said to me that it was because it broke the rubber which attach it to the cranck in itself.
  54. #54
The gmc doesn't have the rubber part to break
  55. #55
The rubber part is a harmonic damper
this helps to reduce crank back lash

alot of cars dont have the rubber at all
many of the gti6 forum users run a pully without them and have done so for many miles with no significant side effects

speak to lynx enginnering who do the 306 ones
  56. #56
im interested if there is a group buy happening.

Let me know as soon as you do! Would you like us to start a list?

Need to place a order for rather a few bits soon!
  62. #62
Are the ebay ones the same as the GMC ones ie: weight and quality cause I would be interested.
  63. #63
    i would order 2.
  64. #64
The large eBay one is lighter than the large GMC one and the small one im guessing is lighter than standard (GMC just the large pulley, eBay Large and small pulley plus belt)! The only difference with the ebay one is it slightly underdrives the alternator, not the best if you have big subs or lots of gadgets drawing power! But on a plus it does free up some power!
  65. #65
Spoke to Colin on eBay about a group buy for his kit featured below! The kit comes with crank pulley (215g), alternator pulley (85g) and alternator belt!

Original price was £100 inc P+P and Colin will knock 15% off if we get 5 people, he may knock off more depending on numbers though! So now £85 inc P+P!

    £85 Delivered!

This kit is a few pounds more than the GMC pulley but its comes complete with a new alternator belt which is advised to be changed when changing the pulley anyway so which in effect be cheaper if you do buy a new belt! Also this kit has a lighter crank pulley than the GMC one and a lighter alternator pulley therefore aiding freeing up the revseven more and also this kit slightly underdrives the alternator which release more engine power!

If anyone would like a kit please put there name down:-

Just been and picked mine up from the Post Office. The quality of these pulleys is fantastic, and so so light

Got to say a massive thanks to qrty for sorting this out, and to Colin for agreeing and making them and for sending them out so quickly.

    Cheers lads

Mine came to work yesterday but had the day off so only got it today! The pulley are amazing, just moved house so i doubt they will be on the weekend but i will try haha!

And no worries lads pleasure to help out!

Still speaking to Colin and it seems he can make alot off stuff so im sure we will be hearing from him in future!

Also people can still order these if they want a kit! Follow the instructions on post 81!!!

Are you interessted in making a guide about installing them? or just shoot some pics while doing it?
  135. #135
Yeh, will give it a go.
Want to see if i can do it without taking the alternator off, depends if i can get a spanner on it, bit tight to the chassis.

If it's raining i'll have to see if i can get the front end in the garage
  136. #136
i want to see some opinions of the people who put this in the cranck.
  137. #137
Managed to get mine on today, Quite a bit of work.
Had to drop the ecu side of the engine to get the old pulley off then the new one on.
Alternator needed to be removed to get old pulley off then new on.

Won't be using the Saxo till next weekend so can't comment atm.
  138. #138
but you didnt see if it revs more free or something like that? i dont know how could you wait to use the car!!!hehe
  139. #139
lol, My car is at the end of the driveway so gets stuck behind the parents cars.
Cant really get much feel if i use the saxo for the work drive, only a 3mile journey so i'll be going for a drive on the weekend.
  140. #140
Didnt get chance to do mine at the weekend! But as soon as i do will update with pictures and videos!

Colin makes all kinds of things from tools to throttle bodies! Apparently there is a kit being done by him too!
  141. #141
Got mine in the mail today

He helps Sandy with the body kit that is on rallye reg,Iv spoke to him about it before.

And someone please fit these and let me know what there like.
  143. #143
I've just looked under the car before i was going to change the crank pulley, alternator pulley and belt but i ran in to some problems. Here's a pic:

My first gues is the belt collin provided is to short, can anyone confirm this or is it going to fit? Second how do i remove the tension from the belt so i can remove the crank pulley? If I'm wright the pulley is only secured by 3 bolts?
    sorry for the noob questions
  144. #144
i'm fooked, i have an airco so there is an extra pulley next to the crank pulley and alternator pulley. The belt is never going to fit... also my crank pulley has a different diameter then the light weight crank pulley. Anyone knows if i still can use the light weight pulley or do i need an orther one?
  145. #145
i think you cant put that pulley into your saxo mate.
  146. #146
just contacted Collin about it, gona try and fit it. If it doesn't run i can send it back and i get a refund. but i hope it's going to run
  147. #147
mines been fitted today had a full engine build so only going steady at the min.
  148. #148
My pulley's arrived today!! looking good
Hopefully put them on this weekend!

If you disconnect the aircon and the idle pulley at the top middle it should fit! The lightweight pulley is designed to be a differnet size to release more power!

Forget about Non-uk saxo's having aircon!

Let us know how it goes!

    +1111111
  153. #153
I think it's to small a change to notice much but does feel like it revs a bit easier.
  154. #154
it fits!!! had to get an other larger belt but it fits perfect.
  155. #155
After getting rid of the stupid tensioning roller, it now looks like this..

I had to re-locate the altinator because i made a strenghtening bar there.

It's now lower on the engine , mounted on my new home made support!

I haven't done a test drive but i also think it revs quicker!
  156. #156
i have receive my alloy pulley thank you very much to colin satchel i have only good words to him.
  157. #157
I don't know about you guy's but i'm convinced this helps to pick up the revs quicker!
Anyway i'm happy with the result!

The Saxo's without airconditioning have a 128 mm pulley, the ones with A/C have an 138 mm pulley.

I believe this is still open! Page 5 Post 81!
  161. #161
well I've fitted the crank pulley a few months back, butt i coudn't replace the alternator pullet at the time and forgot about it. Now i want to replace the alternator pulley with the lightweight one but how do you get the OEM pulley off???
  162. #162
The thread has an allen key style fixing in the middle then you need a swan neck spanner to get the nut.

When I did mine it was on so tight I had to take the alternator off then grip the old pully with some clamps and get a breaker bar on the nut.

thanks mate, any idea wich size allen key & spanner i need for the job?

Arent these known to fail, so getting one of these would be a worth while investment.
  165. #165
Can I place an order for one still?
