Grinding nosie

Howdy, after driving nearly 300 motorway miles yesterday i now have a quite loud grinding/squeel noise coming from the car. The noise dosent happen when im accelerating or am holding it on the accelerator but as soon as i lift off the accelerator or just put the clucth in to change gear it happens. It dosent happen if i brake while accelerating so i dont think its a pad catching the disc. I cant really make out where the nosie is coming from. Could it be the clutch release bearing?

    cheers chris

Chris, does this happen if you put the clutch in and hold it in, does the noise happen constantly when you do that?

Also like you said, when you lift off the accellerator it happens right?

Is the noise sort of a deep wallowy echo??

yeah happens if the clutch is held in but yeah happens constantly however when i first start driving it it doesnt do it at first but doesent happen when stationary regardless of how the clutch is or how the engine is reved, so im now thinking again maybe brakes or diff. The noise is kinda like when your brakes grind but its a deep wallow/whirring noise

    cheers chris

Its not your brakes mate, it sounds like the exact same thing i had with mine a few months back, its the cv joint on the driveshaft of the offending side.

Might need replacing or if your lucky it will just need re-greasing, i got away with re-greasing it and its been fine ever since.

Mine did it when you let off the accellerator, when the clutch goes in and only once warm exactly like yours.

The key is the only when warm part, because the joint has run dry of cv grease, it starts to play up when it gets hot because there is no lubricant to keep it moving right.

Check your cv boots for wear and this should indicate which side the noise is coming from.

mine does this, been told its the clutch release bearing, to start with only did it when clutch was pressed in... but now can hear a horrible like grindin noise, someone said it mite be the bearing wearing through the clutch plates, been like it for ages though ant had money to fix it

Do you get the deep wallow noise when you change gear or leave the clutch in?

does the noise happen when you let off the accellerator?

yeah when i lift only has to be a very slight lift off though.

I'd put money on your cv joint being the problem. Exactly the same as what happened to mine a few months ago. Re-greased offending cv joint and job done been fine ever since.

I've got this occuring on mine as well, started last tuesday. its a rotational knocking/grinding noise when i lift off the accelerator. The faster i'm going, the louder it is. It does it from cold as well..... which is what was pointing me to the diff at first.

I'm pretty sure mines from the pass side, but the cv boots feel perfectly fine.... I'll have to get the car up on the ramps and get under to look.....

I have come to the conclusion that the noise is coming from the passenger side, ill get it up on the ramps on saturday and see if i can see whats going on with the C.V joint.

    cheers chris

ive had this problem before and it was the cv joint in the end

two options id put it down to are gearbox bearing or cv joint.
