LSD - How does it work?

  1. #1
I had a search on goggle and read some stuff about it but still don't get whats it's purpose.

The reason I'm asking is because when people compare the Accord Type-R to the EP3 Civic they say the accord has a LSD and the CTR doesn't.

What difference does it make, etc?

    ATR has a Mechanical LSD.

Mechanical LSD's use either gears or clutches inside the diff to prevent single wheelspin. A simple clutch LSD has a set of clutch plates attached to each axle, and matching clutch plates attached to the housing. A mechanism uses the turning power applied to the LSD to push the clutches locked.

So it traction control the electronic version of LSD?

There are electronic differentials out there that use various means to control power output to each wheel. These are often called 'active' differentials. The active yaw control in an EVO Lancer is one example. It uses electronics to sense turns, and physically delivers more power to the outside wheel

I see what you mean now.

Taking back the ATR example the LSD will only be advantage against the CTR on track, right?

Works well in the everyday world

ATR is nice to drive and it proper digs in and pulls itself arround corners

If it was an imported Civic type R they come with 220 bhp and an LSD...so an interesting match.

an lsd breaks up the power through the diff and a series of gears to prevent wheel spin. theirfore you get more power down without spinning the wheels! which is why all high powered fwd or rwd cars should have one!

you can still spin up with an lsd though if your heavy footed
and then you get axle tramp (bouning of the suspension) which isnt nice

in a nutshell, transmits torque to the wheel with the most grip or has the most resistance.

you could hear in brands in the wet my diff kicking in.

With the bodies and the sheer noise they make the diff drastically changes the engine note lol
