Split inner CV boot (drivers side)

  1. #1
Today (somehow) I've managed to split my drivers side inner CV boot.

The car appears to be driving OK, so Im hoping the driveshaft itself is OK. It is 3 years old mind you and did 100 miles today with no grease in it

If I decide NOT to replace the whole driveshaft straight away... has anyone had any experience with a CV boot repair kit?

I guess it basically just a new rubber which is steel tie-wrapped in palce or something??

    Comments?

I cant be arsed changing the driveshaft this week, so Im just looking for something to get me by...

Just use one of your other cars si! lol

I have tried using one in the past and found it ok for a few weeks but wasnt very good. I ran mine with no grease for about a month at least, was annoying but not too bad.
  3. #3
    Annoying in what way?

I just came back from Suies and noticed if I turn slightly to the right I get a quiet whistle/humm?
  4. #4
Yeah that'll get louder if you dont put more grease in it or change the boot. Also when accelerating you get a clunking/knocking noise.
  5. #5
ah the hum, same happened to mine before it was replaced. Replacing the boot is a cock wobble, have to remove the inner workings of the CV, or you can buy the wrap around ones which you have to seal up the middle, and you just know thats never going to work. Probably just easier to replace the shaft
  6. #6
Ahh... yes, I guess when the whees turned, its making the knuckle joint stress at other angles, hence the humming... as its probably dry by now
  7. #7
are you just talking about the gater? you should be able to just replace it haynes 8.4 no4 if you have one but you can just buy a gater repair component kit
  8. #8
Yeah you can Aaron but there shit to be honest. A new driveshaft isnt that much alone.
  9. #9
plus anyway you look at it its gonna have to be taken out so might as well put a new one back in i guess point taken
  10. #10
just replace the gator mate, they always make noises if grease gets low, strangly thats the inner joint? is that not the same one that failed when your diff went?

anyhow if not you can buy a kit from GSF, EUROs etc which is approx £8 or so for inner cv boot, shaft needs to come out, comes with grease and then you just repack and fit job done, once shaft is out you can see if its done any damage by moving it around, if its loose or feels funny then best to replace it, if not then just use the kit as above.
  11. #11
OK, cheeers... Will think about this.

But as the shaft has to come out, and this shaft is 3 years old, it might just be best to change the damn thing.

Yes, this is the inner... but its on the opposite side to the one that failed, when the crown wheel went.

At that time, the slippage was causing the gaitors to twist, if you remember... this gaitor ahs never been straightened out, so its likely that the added strain of twisted rubber has eventually just caused it to split?

i had the inner CV joint go on mine a few months ago. didn't even try to sort it myself - garage did it & had to replace the driveshafts as well coz they were fooked
  13. #13
yeah i would of thought so mate, but like I said, if you see what its like and seems fine id just get the gator, driveshafts are designed to take some stick (just not when the diff locks and the wheels keep turning at high speed etc) if you know what I mean

my mate used the cv repair kit a few times, he had a one from a small car shop which had grease new gaitor and some cable ties in (the cable ties didnt hold the gaitor on very well and it only lasted a few hundred miles). im not sure if citroen do a kit using the steel gaitor clips?? im sure he his last one from them.

to much fun in the snow last year caused his boot to split/come off
  16. #16
most cv boot kits come with the proper metal clips.

I spotted mine had 2 torn inners 2 weeks ago, made quick repairs while it was on the ramp but it was a sunday so i couldnt buy new boots.

Got 2 boots from EURO parts for £16 intenting to do them one night after work. Was too busy though so put it in a garage on tuesday, cost me £40 to have them both fitted. MOT was on the thurs so i was desparate to have em done

  26. #26
i get like a scratching noise/scraping when i turn left....
    probably the same thing?
  27. #27
Have a look under the car at the cv boots and see if there split or if there is grease everywhere.
  28. #28
CV boots are a pain in the arse.

The ones I have done are basic rubbish ones that have a split in the middle and you have to wrap it around the DS and superglue it together. Stay clear of them.

Best bet is to get a proper one and get it done at a garage.

i might have a browse of the scrap yards!
  33. #33
just replace the boot itself, shouldnt have done any damage to the joint unless ran for months without grease. not to bad to do at all, just replace the boot and re-pack with grease. easy peasy!
  34. #34
How do you check this problem. Where abouts are they located. Just interested to know. Also do you have to grease them every so often.
  35. #35
get under the car, check each end of the driveshafts, you will see the gaitors. No need to regrease unless they haev leaked
  36. #36
drve ie for agesnw igt a temporary boot had to glue it togather didnt last very long.
