Could a....

   Could a split in the drivers side driveshaft CV joint be causing a whine from my engine at low revs?
   
   I can hear it when I drive but if I sit in passenger seat I cannot hear it. Could it be the alternator on the way out?
   
   Checked under car and there is a rip in the CV boot and oil and grease leaking.
   
   Got new driveshaft to fit saturday

   A whine....emmm Possibly...Highly doubt it...When they spilt and the grease dries up they tend knock and click.
   
   I still have my money on the alternator belt

   When opening the bonnet it sounds like the whine is coming from the inlet manifold by the 16v badge?????????

   The noise is really getting on my nerves.....so tempted to hit the engine with a massive spanner. Seems to work in the films

   mine tapps in my vtr something similar to what your describing. tried checking if plugs are loose or tappets?
