im off to the scrappy to look see what they got as my mate just got some alloys off a car there, just wondering, its the 306 gti brakes and the ones off a berlingo van that go stright on the sax? big inprovement in stopping? and anything else to look out for? quite frankly the standard brakes are scary

theres shit loads of brakes you can use. i dont see how people think standard brakes are so bad?

well, i can only speak for my car but they seen to take ages to actually stop you and theres a massive dead zone between pushing the pedal and it actually biting. checked tne pads and discs, all seems fine, might need a bleed i guess.
just thought as i was there id keep my eye open lol

    I agree with Williams..

My standard VTR brakes are fine..Were fine at "The Ring" and at Brands Hatch, faded abit at Brands but thats to be expected..For road use though mine are sharp etc..

sounds like mine might be in need of a good bleed then, might try it on the weekend see if it makes any odds.

while we're on the subject of bigger brakes, rather than buying the parts 2nd hand, would it be easier to buy calipers and disks from eurocarparts? or is this not adviseable?

Well if standard are 'fine'. Never think what better brakes would be like? Thought that was the whole point in modding. To make the car better

I dunno Ive never tracked a car but I think the saxo breaks are pants

I had bigger brakes on my old Saxo..Only difference i really noticed was when on track, they didnt fade at all as the heat dissperssed (sp) better..

By all means have bigger brakes but it only increases unsprung weight (depending on what you get)..Also its only a road car, you wont notice huge differences in road driving..

Also there was a test done on a German motoring show and a Std MK1 VTS stopped in pretty much the same distance as a Porsche 911 Turbo iirc..

ive had, brembos, wilwoods, 266mm 206 and 283mm 307 brakes. got standards on at the minute and imo they give better feel on the back roads.
going for 4pots on standard discs though to give a bit more braking force but keep weight down.

but iv got standards and literally after 10 mins of hard braking , every minute or so hard brake , another stretchs , round about , hard brake etc. they go up in smoke! do i need new discs and pads or bigger brakes

that indicates your cooking the pads which means its time to get some better pads, and ideally some disc's. Kam racing have some good cheap Group N discs in, coupled with some good mintex m1144 or carbonne loraine pads you should be fine. I would also advise changing your fluid to a better dot 4 or change to dot 5.1.

i found the standard brakes pants. couldnt stop
  14. #14
every one over looks the brake fluid, you could have 800mm discs but with old crappy fluid thats prob got more air than fluid in it then theyd be poo. If your doin track days or regular hard braking then your best either renewing your fluid or upgrading to better spec like EBC dot 5.1

if you have decent pads, decent disc's, good fluid and free moving pistons in the caliper you should have no problems, not like your stopping a van. could allways add some braided hoses to keep the pressure going to the caliper. There not pants, there just poorly maintained.

when all the braking system is working perfectly theyll bring u to a standstill quicker than a merc E55 AMG 0-60

ive found standard brakes on a Saxo arent re-assuring enough.

a well maintained standard braking setup should be more than adequte to stop these little cars, but for track and fast road they do fade pretty easily so bigger brakes are always a worthy upgrade imo
