Metal polishing

Brother is going on about metal polishing his cam covers and we having a little arguement how it works.

This is how i think its done (well this is how i know its done should i say)
    1. Paint stripper or sand all the paint off so its back to bare metal.
    2. Go up grades 200 / 400 / 600 / 800 / 1200 grades of sand paper sanding the covers to a smooth finish
    3. Apply metal polish (AG) using a polishing pad
    4. Buff polish off
    5. Redo steps 3 and 4 a couple times until they're really shiney
    6. Apply a few coats of Sealant.

    Brothers method:
    1. Sand to bare metal
    2. Sand it smooth
    3. Apply polish
    4. Spray Laquer on top. << ??? <<

My arguement was that i've never heard of anyone spraying laquer on top of polish (as its suppose to be other way around).. He replied with "Laquer goes on anything to make it shiney and stop it rusting".....

Is he right? Am i wrong? If i am i've never heard of it before...

lacquer wont stick mate as its not 'keyed' so will flake off and look poo your method is correct

pred said something about zoop sealent but its was expensive iirc

when i've used spray can laquers in the past they've tended to actually dull the finish slightly as well, over what they looked like in paint top coat. still worth it to protect anyway, but like has been said it wouldn't stick to a smooth polished finish!

your right, your brother is wrong.

    you dont need lacquer.

lacquer certainly wont bond properly to a polished surface.

laquer just wouldnt work, especially with all of the silicone from polishing the things
