As Title, What You Guys Think On The Reliabilty Of The 16v Engines, Any Problems To Watch Out For Etc... Plenty Of Opinions Please

pretty good engines and reliable imo, if serviced regularly.
  3. #3
    any more opinions?
  4. #4
mine has been pretty reliable so far and it is quite modified.

but you can never overlook servicing
  5. #5
seems alright, 8v seems like it can take more abuse tbh but that is purely my opinion.
  6. #6
If they are looked after they are reliable,i have owned 2 vts's now and not had any problems.
  7. #7
    had mine 7 years,few mods.serviced regular.only problem was with a door lock.
  8. #8
pretty reliable engine i must say had no probs as of yet as long as car well serviced, and these cars can take a good bit of punishment as well would go as far as to say alot more than the 8v, just cost more on repairs if they do go wrong.
  9. #9
Very reliable as long as looked after. Ive had mine from 23k to 60k and its never missed a beat other than silly electrical issues (Damn alarm!)
  10. #10
like any other engine...reliable if looked after. Its not the engine's that seem to have the problems...BUT EVERYTHING ELSE on the cars haha. 16v's seem to put strain on the driveshafts, cv's, etc IMO they aint strong enough for the standard 120bhp they put out.

Great little car's when they work u love them...when they dont you hate them!
  11. #11
i have broke a couple of diffs now lol
  12. #12
must be doing something wrong. ive done 80k miles in mine and never broke a gearbox or diff.
  13. #13
Very Reliable tbh. No problems what so ever with mine, and going to stay that way service every 3k .
  14. #14
Same as what everyone else says really. Had mine for nearly 2 years and only had to replace the crank pulley (£100). Nothing really.
  15. #15
As stated by most they're very reliable, mines had a tough time and the only problem I've ever had is shit idling which is down to the management system, like everyone else says the engines are great it's just the rest of the car thats the problem, lol.

Cant comment on the 16V but there seems to be alot more 'to go wrong'.

The 8v on the other hand i can comment on. I've had 4 myself and no major issues with any. Just keep them well maintained, filter changes, oil changes.

I know someone who ran his VTR for about month with very very very little oil in it and its still going strong (obviously he eventually put some oil in it).

    .
what a second camshaft and more valves....

its not a massively different engine really interms of its design.

I was talking about VTS in general, sorry for going bit off topic.

I heard the 16V has a weaker engine than the 8V, not sure how true that is though.

End of the day aslong as its well maintained and drove with mechanical sympathy not much should go wrong.
  21. #21
wey u gota fink the 16v has more valves, so the block is lets say weaker than a a 8v, but on the whole, u get a mass more power owta the 16v.

nd 4 doze ov uz whu spk ENGLISH?
  23. #23
mines reliable touch wood still hasnt broke on me yet!
  24. #24
TU's in general are very strong well designed and put together engine's..Can tune them massively without worrying about the bottom end too..

I would say the engine will never go wrong in itelf, i.e snapped conrod or something like that..You may have a few niggling sensor problems at some point though but all car's have their little issue's..I would rather the odd sensor problem than a shitty weak engine tbh..
  25. #25
16v for me actually was more reliable than my 8v i had previous.

the 8v had more miles and was driven alot harder than the 16v iv got though.
  26. #26
It can also depend on pure luck of the draw to dude, my friends vts is looked after beautifully, works at a garage so gets it seviced regulary and doesnt cain it everywhere either but the thing just keeps breaking on him, iv had three phone calls in the last 8months to pick his ass up cus his cars borken down haha
  27. #27
    Nothing wrong with mine yet.

What reason tho, an actual engine failure?

I doubt it very much, its always somethin else, sensors, wiring etc.

All the TUs are pretty solid and that goes for most modern engines really, they're tested to destruction before they go into production.
  29. #29
Agree with the above..It'll be sensors that cause problems..
  30. #30
112k miles now, hasnt missed a beat and still pulls as well as my lower milage 106 GTI, most other things on the car have broke tho.. lol, so its probably the most reliable thing in the car... if serviced regularly of course
  31. #31
Vts engines are pritty strong!! and will last as long as they are serviced on time......
  32. #32
Had mine for a few months now, it's seems to be running ok. Depends on how you treat it. If you red lining every day then your asking for problems.
  33. #33
my vts engine seems pretty bullet proof (touch wood) never had a problem with the engine and have ran several tanks of nitrous through it.
serviced every 3-5k though and always warmed up properly.
  34. #34
also, a guy i know (bit of an idiot) bought a vts for £600 with 140k on it. He will drive it on the limiter from cold and hasn't serviced it since he got it. it won't be long before it goes wrong (i would have thought) however, its lasted 10k of abuse so far.
so i'd say they are a good little engine.
  35. #35
    16v is win.
The engine aslong as serviced will be good as gold.
Sensors and electronic crap can go wrong though (just like any of the Saxo's)

I'd find that roger and give him a slap.

give him more than that. Its caused me to miss track time/mot etc.....

Tried now coilpack and plugs and still running poor, so hoping the new CPS will fix it so I can go annoy JC once more.

personally i've had 4x 8v and 3x 16v and i would say by a clear distance all my 16v engines have been far more reliable. never had any problems with them or their ancillaries, just had to replace a couple of coolant temp sensors. with the 8v engines i haven't had any major problems, just more little niggles. the 8v ones have always been rough idling whereas the 16v are very smooth, and i've had to replace a couple of 8v alternators, and broken an 8v gearbox. this could just be due to those particular cars been not as well maintained by previous owners before i bought them though so i can't really say 100%. if you buy a good example and look after it there shouldn't be too much going wrong other than general wear and tear

only had my second 16valve about a month no problems yet just keep it seviced regular. my 1st vts i put a raceland induction kit on and had lots of problems with the oil breather there was oil ever were needed a catch tank.
