Want To Make 6 x 9 Box's For My Speakers!!!

  1. #1
Hi been thinking bout making some boxs out of MDF or something to put some 6 x 9's in but wasnt sure whether there is a special way to make it, or whether you have to allow holes etc for the heat. or can you just simply make a solid box and cut out a hole for the 6 x 9 's to fit into it. i don't really want them in my parcel shelf coz i think it ruins it abit, and also it attracts unwanted people to maybe smash a window and have a look inside lol. if anyone can advise me if i need to do it a certain way that would be kool, or is it just plain and simple make a box and put them in.

    thanks

Not to be harsh or anything mate, but what on earth would you wanna do that for? Fair enough if you've a big install with no parcel shelf and no back seats... but if you've still got all seats etc i wouldnt bother mate. Not worth the time and wouldnt make a slightest bit of difference. Get yourself a stealth shelf and stick them on one of those.

If your doing it, make solid boxes. No heat will be produced and if you had holes in the boxes, the air would escape and they would sound no different to having them loose in the book (Ie crap)

yeh i see you point, but i just dont relli wanna cut into the parcel shelf, if i were to do it, would it make a difference in sound, im not looking to improve the sound all i want to make the box for is just to house them.

    cheers

No, i meant a stealth shelf, there made from MDF and have pre-cut holes half the time. You fit your speakers to the under side of it (Loosing the grill's) and the carpet covers the speakers over so thieving beggers cant even see them. There designed to look like the standard shelf

Id say make one big box which will cover the whole of the underneath of your parcel shelf. Cut 6x9 holes in it. screw existing parcel shelf on top of it. Mount the 6x9s in it and carpet the lot. Thin carpet over the top of the speakers too so you cant see them. Would look much better than two odd boxes hangin down under the shelf.

    Dont listen to this! ^^^

Pretty much all drivers work best in some kind of enclosure.

If you put these in some nice, sealed boxes they will give you loads of punch and they will sound much warmer. Granted, 6x9's are designed to run IB, but they really wont compare to a set that are boxed up.

The best way to do it would be to mount the box to the underside of an MDF parcel shelf and cut a hole in the shelf for the speaker to sit in.

With regards to having a hole in the box (ported), i wouldnt bother. If you keep it sealed then they will access all frequencies and sound nicer and punchier, whereas ported boxes thed to lose the kick.

Although that said, a set of components up front would still sound better, with a small sub in the boot.

    Your choice mate.

I was about to say the same as coonper. Its all good to read threads and make comments but to listen to different speakers in and out of enclosures is a different thing. I fitted a set of 6x9 speakers under the rear seats of an old style mini and amped them and it sounded great and was very punchy. Like said it would be cheaper to buy the boxes from egay than make them. I know a company called car sound supplies do them but i dont know how much.

boxed 6x9s would actually sound ok, obviously not as good as a sub and comps.

why dont you just invest in a sub and an amp?? you wont regret it mate. much much much much much better sound than 6x9's and also nob heads outside cant see what you have in your boot

i just took out my 6x9s and now im left with subs and comps in front doors...the sound quality is so much better without 6x9s you can hear so much more lol. but if u want 6x9s then thats cool imo wouldnt bother boxing them tho!
